What services are offered at a needle exchange?
As well as exchanging used injecting equipment for new sterile injecting equipment you will be able to access advice on harm reduction when it comes to injecting drugs.
The team will also be able to signpost you to your local Drug and Alcohol team (DAAT) who can give guidance and support on stopping drug use.
Why would I need a needle exchange?
Using compromised needles can lead to infections at the sight of infection, as well as the transmission of blood borne viruses such as Hep C. By using a needle exchange you will have access to new sterile injecting equipment and this will reduce the risk of infection.
Can I get new injecting equipment if I don’t have any to exchange?
Yes, you will still be able to access the service if you don’t have any equipment to exchange. The team serving you will talk to you about the safety implications of not disposing of needles correctly and will encourage you to return these on your next visit.
