What is the Menopause?
The menopause is a natural occurrence in every woman’s life whereby she stops having periods and can no longer conceive naturally. While most periods will reduce gradually, some women can experience periods stopping suddenly altogether.

To mark World Menopause Day on the 18th of October, The International Menopause Society is publishing a report which encourages women to have a full health audit, and to take action at the time which the menopause hits in order to avoid chronic diseases later in your life.
A survey was conducted by the British Menopause Society (BMS) in 2017 which was released in order to mark World Menopause Day found that three quarters of women say that the menopause caused them to change their life. Over half of said women have said that it had a negative impact on their lives.
The findings reveal that there is a far greater need for support for women suffering from the menopause all over the UK. Initiatives such as the Menopause Café, a project set up to increase awareness around the impact of the menopause, help encourage women to seek this support.
World Menopause Day aims to enable women who are going through the transitional period of the menopause with the education to understand their bodies and how they can live fulfilled lives whilst managing the symptoms of the menopause.
Why is this important?
It has not only been reported that women feel that the menopause has had a negative impact on their lives, but also that the menopause can cause health problems later in life unless addressed properly.
Doctors have called for women to take action in order to avoid chronic diseases later in life, which is why World Menopause Day is so important.
On average, roughly a third of a woman’s life is lived after the menopause. The general age of the natural menopause among women who live in developed countries is typically between 50 and 52. In less developed countries, the menopause tends to occur in the late 40s.
The decade after the menopause begins is where women become vulnerable to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease), cancer and osteoporosis, which is why doctors are encouraging women to take action in the early postmenopause years.
In the postmenopause years there are preventable steps which women can take to set themselves on a positive and healthy course for the future. Not only that, but the 2018 World Menopause Day campaign will focus on raising awareness of midlife women’s health, concentrating particularly on sexual wellbeing after the menopause.
Sexual health is defined as a state of emotional, mental, physical and social health related specifically to sexuality. After the menopause, it is common for women to experience sexual problems which can not only impair personal relationships, but can also negatively impact mental health, social functioning and overall quality of life.
