The average amount of female body hair varies. Commonly, a female can have fine hair in areas above the lips and on the chin, chest, abdomen or back. In some instances the female body can make too many male hormones causing the hair to be coarse and dark, this condition is called hirsutism. Females suffering from excessive hair (or hirsutism) can feel very self-conscious, but the condition is not uncommon and affects up to 15% of females. The hormone conditions that cause excessive hair growth may also cause acne, problems with menstrual periods, trouble losing weight, and diabetes. Excessive hair growth tends to run in families and in general is a harmless condition. Hirsutism can be associated with a common syndrome called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
