Cow & Gate Comfort - For the dietary management of colic and constipation.
Cow & Gate Comfort is a milk suitable for bottlefed babies from birth for the dietary management of colic or constipation. If your healthcare professional has advised you use Cow & Gate Comfort, you may find the following information helpful.
How is Cow & Gate Comfort different to other milks?
Because their digestive systems are still growing and developing, some babies may not be able to fully digest some of the ingredients found in standard infant milks. Cow & Gate Comfort has been specially formulated with:
- Less than half the lactose found in standard infant milks
- Our unique blend of prebiotic oligosaccharides
- Partially digested whey proteins
- A special vegetable fat blend
- Added starch for a thicker formula
- Key nutrients, just like those found in our standard infant milks
At Cow and Gate we are committed to providing the best nutrition for babies and toddlers. That's why we have now added LCPs (Omega 3 and 6) to our Comfort milk. LCPs are fatty acids found naturally in breastmilk and are important for your baby's healthy growth and development.
How is Cow & Gate Comfort different to other colic remedies?
The exact causes of colic are often unknown and may be due to a number of factors. The ingredients in Cow & Gate Comfort can help tackle several potential causes of colic in bottlefed babies. It is suitable as a sole source of nutrition from birth and as part of a weaning diet from 6 months.
Most other colic remedies only tackle one potential cause of colic at a time. Colic remedies such as Infacol and Dentinox may help reduce excess gas, one of the potential causes of colic, while other remedies such as Colief may help babies with a reduced ability to digest lactose, another potential cause of colic.
We would advise not to combine remedies.
What teat should I use?
Cow & Gate Comfort is thicker than some other milks - for a more controlled intake. The thickness gives a more even flow to help your baby take in less air when feeding. Try either a variable flow teat or one with a single hole (either a medium or fast flow) and see what suits your baby best.
When can I expect the symptoms to improve?
Every baby is different - you may notice that their symptoms start to improve after a few days but for some babies it may take longer. If your baby's symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, or if you have any other concerns then it's best to get advice from your health visitor or GP.
What changes will I notice?
The special ingredients in Cow & Gate Comfort means the consistency of your baby's stools may become looser and greener. Don't worry! This is perfectly normal.
You might also notice your baby has increased wind – especially when you first start feeding with Cow & Gate Comfort. Again, this is nothing to worry about – it's just a sign that your baby's digestive system is beginning to get used to the milk.
Please ensure you follow the make up instructions carefully as this is a special milk. Because powdered milks are not sterile, failure to follow instructions may make your baby ill.
For hygiene reasons, do not store made-up feeds. Make up each feed as required and always discard unfinished feeds after 2 hours.
If necessary offer cooled boiled water between feeds.
Do not heat in a microwave. Hot spots may occur and cause scalding.
Due to the special ingredients in Cow & Gate Comfort, the milk can separate once prepared. If this occurs, shake the bottle vigorously to mix and use as normal.
Cow & Gate Comfort is a ticker feed so we suggest you use either variable flow teats OR single hole medium or fast flow teats when feeding your baby.
Storage – use powder within 4 weeks of opening and store in a cool dry place – do not refrigerate.
- Wash hands and sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.
- Boil 1 litre of freshly run water. Leave kettle to cool for 30 minutes. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.
- Measure the required amount of water (refer to feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle. Do not add powder to boiling water due to risk of scalding.
- Using the scoop provided, level off the powder with the built-in leveller. Do not press/heap the powder.
- Add one scoop to every 30ml (1 fl oz) of boiled cooled water. Add the correct number of scoops to the water. Adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful.
- Replace seal on bottle. Shake well (for 10 seconds) to dissolve powder. Remove seal, replace with a sterilised teat.
- Cool under running tap. Check temperature of feed. Feed immediately.
