This medicine helps relieve dry coughs. The main ingredient pholcodine, is a cough suppressant and suppresses dry, tickly coughs.

This medicine is available as a liquid that is taken by mouth.

Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after five days, or if they get worse during treatment with this medicine.


Adults: 5-10ml as required but the dose may be increased to 15ml if necessary. Not more than 60ml in 24 hours.

Children 6-12 years: 5ml four to five times daily.

Children 3-5 years: 5ml three times daily.

Children 1-2 years: 2.5ml three or four times daily.

Children under 1 year: Not suitable


Before using Pavacol-D

This medicine may not be suitable for everyone and some people must never have it. Check the leaflet that comes with your medicine to make sure that the medicine is suitable before having it.

Always get advice from a healthcare professional before having this medicine if:

•you are allergic or sensitive to or have had a reaction to any of the ingredients in the medicine
•this medicine is for a child under six years of age
•you have liver problems
•you have or are at risk of developing respiratory failure
•you have chronic bronchitis, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis or COPD
•you have asthma
•you have kidney problems
•you have a persistent cough or have been coughing for a long time
•you are bringing up excessive secretions from your chest
•you have a history of drug abuse
•you are taking other cough and cold preparations
Medicines interactions

If you are taking more than one medicine they may interact with each other. Before taking this medicine consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines including vitamins, supplements and herbal or complementary preparations.

The following medicines may interact with this medicine:

•monoamine oxidase inhibitors - do not take this medicine if you are currently taking these medicines or have taken them within the last 14 days
•other cough and cold medicines
•neuromuscular blockers
•medicines that lower blood pressure
•central nervous system depressants such as barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives, tranquillisers, phenothiazines and tricyclic antidepressant

Possible side effects of Pavacol-D

Most medicines can cause some side-effects but not everyone having the same medicine will get the same side-effects.

The following side-effects have been associated with people taking this medicine:

•hypersensitivity reactions
•sputum retention
•gastrointestinal disturbances
•skin reactions including rashes
