Vet Prescriptions

72. Prescription Regulations.

All medicines are given a classification, depending on which category the medicine is in determines if a prescription is required. For medicines intended for animals if the product is in the POM-V category, by law, we can only dispense these items if you possess a valid written veterinary prescription.

We will check the prescriptions you send us to ensure they include all the information required by law including a declaration that the animal is under veterinary care and the signature and details of the Veterinary Surgeon who prescribed it.

We will also check that the veterinary surgeon’s name appears on the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) register as a practising vet.

73. Prescription charges.

Most vets will charge for a prescription (usually between £8 - £12). If your vet decides that your pet requires treatment with a Prescription Only Medicine, then they are legally obliged to supply you with a prescription if you ask for one. They cannot prevent you from buying your pet's medicines from elsewhere.

74. Expiry dates

Most prescriptions are only valid for a maximum of six months from the date they are signed, prescriptions for Controlled Drugs are only valid for 28 days. It is important you check carefully before placing an order. We can only dispense medication for legally valid prescriptions.

75. Repeat Prescriptions

Repeatable prescriptions may be dispensed up to the maximum number of repeats the vet specifies on the prescription and within the validity of the prescription.  As only one prescription is written this may help to reduce your vet costs.

76. Electronic copies

We are able to accept e-mailed or uploaded copies of prescriptions of prescriptions except:

Where the item prescribed is a controlled drug e.g. Epiphen, Phenobarbital, Tramadol.
Your vet has written on the prescription that only the original copy is acceptable.

If we cannot accept an electronic copy you will need to send the original prescription to our Freepost address. We cannot accept photocopies.

If you are e-mailing prescriptions to us please include your order reference number as this will help to speed up the processing of your order.

77. Controlled Drugs

Controlled drugs are drugs listed in schedules 2-4 of the misuse of drugs regulations 2001. Your vet or our technicians will be able to advise you if the drugs prescribed fall into this category.

For Controlled Drugs, we must receive the original written prescription in the post before we can process your order and dispense these medications. We cannot accept copies, including electronic copies, of prescriptions for this type of drug.

We must supply the full quantity of the controlled drug within the 28-day expiry specified on the prescription.

78. Placing your order

To place an order search for the product prescribed, click on the vet prescription tab and enter the number of tablets required.

Click on the basket and specify that you have a vet prescription.

Checkout and keep a note of your order reference number.

79. Processing your order.

We need to make a few checks on all the prescriptions we receive. These will include checking the credentials of the prescriber and that there have been no alterations from the original.

It is an offence to submit a fraudulent prescription to obtain veterinary medicines and for a prescription to be altered, unless authorised to do so by a prescriber.

We will also make checks with veterinary practices to detect any fraudulent prescriptions. By placing an order and submitting a prescription to us, you are giving us consent to access your personal data for this specific reason.

If we identify any prescription misuse, we are obliged to inform our regulatory authority the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and/or the Police. The VMD will investigate and decide what further legal action is taken.

We aim to process all orders containing Prescription Only Veterinary Medicines within 3 working days of receiving a valid prescription. Your delivery time will then be dependent on your choice of postage made at checkout on our website.

If we cannot process your order within 3 working days we will contact you.

80. Delivery

Please see our delivery terms and conditions for further detail on our delivery options. All orders for prescription-only medicines or controlled drugs will be sent using a service that requires a signature to ensure it is received by the intended recipient. Please be mindful of this when placing an order.

81. Adverse Reactions

In the event of any adverse reaction or lack of efficacy to any medicinal product, it should be reported to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Details of how to do this and the required information can be found on the VMD website click below:

VMD website

You should also report it to your vet and seek their advice.
