Covonia Herbal Mucus Cough Syrup contains liquorice, ipecacuanha and squill which belong to a group of medicines known as expectorants.  They help remove phlegm in people with chesty coughs and colds.


Shake the bottle well before use.

Take the mixture by mouth, sipping slowly for best effect.

Adults, the elderly and children over 12 years, take 2 x 5ml spoonfuls every 4 hours if required.

Do not give to children under the age of 12 years old unless your doctor tells you to.

If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

If you accidentally take too much see a doctor straightaway.  Take the pack with you to show which medicine you have swallowed.


Before you use this medicine.

Do not use this medicine if you have:

  • An allergy to any of the ingredients listed.
  • An allergy to colophony (pine resin) which is contained in some cosmetic products, eg; lipsticks and eyeshade.
  • Any type of heart complaint.
  • Kidney problems.
  • Or are under the age of 12 years,

Talk to your doctor if you are taking:

  • Carbenoxolone for stomach ulcers.
  • Medicines which help remove fluids from the body (ie; water tablets).

Pregnant of breastfeeding? Ask your doctor of pharmacist for advice before using if you are pregnant, might be pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Do not store above 25°.  Some deposits may form on storage.  This is normal and can be mixed by shaking.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines Covonia Herbal Mucus Cough Syrup can have side effects, although these don’t affect everyone:

Allergic reactions such as dermatitis, skin rash, flushing and itchy lumps.

Feeling sick or being sick.

Higher sodium salt and water levels within the body.

Unbalanced potassium and sodium levels may produce side effects of high blood pressure, water retention and irregular heartbeat.

If you notice these or any other side effect not included above, stop use and tell your doctor or pharmacist.  They will tell you what to do.

Do not use after the expiry day.  The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Return any unused medicine to the pharmacy for disposal.


Active ingredients per 5ml: ipecacuanha liquid extract 0.0076ml, liquorice liquid extract 0.125ml, squill oxymel 0.78ml.

The other ingredients: pumilio pine oil, capsicum tincture (capsicum oleoresin), ethanol, chloroform, diethyl ether, arrowroot, menthol, peppermint oil, anise oil, sucrose, black treacle and purified water.

Important ingredient information

Contains 2.3g of sucrose pe 5ml dose.  To be taken into account in people with diabetes.  If you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.

It also contains 2.7% volume ethanol (alcohol), ie; up to 214mg per 10ml dose, equivalent to 6ml beer, or 2.2ml wine per dose.  Harmful for those suffering from alcoholism.  To be taken into account in children, pregnant women and high risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.
