Regaine - What are the facts about hair loss?

About Hair Loss:

On average, the adult head has 100,000 individual strands of hair and most people will shed between 40 and 120 of these per day as part of a healthy re-growth cycle.

Although it’s possible that this loss could be caused by a medical disorder, prescribed medication, poor nutrition, bad hair care techniques or severe stress, in 95% of cases the cause is hereditary – and is known as male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia.

In the case of hereditary hair loss, the genes and hormones in your body have a shrinking effect on your hair follicles, making them ineffective at growing new hairs. Over time, the progressive shrinking of certain scalp follicles leads to a shortening of the hair's growing cycle. Hair becomes thinner and shorter, until there is no growth at all.

Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. Hereditary hair loss can be effectively treated using Regaine Foam and Solution.

For other, non hereditary types of alopecia – such as alopecia areata where bald patches appear on the face and body, or hair loss caused by a medical condition such as chemotherapy – Regaine is not suitable and you should speak to your GP.

What are the facts about hair loss?

  • FACT: Hair loss is very common. As many as 8 million men experience hair loss in the UK
  • FACT: 40% of men experience hair loss by the age of 35
  • FACT: Most of the time, hair loss is hereditary and it can come from either side of your family
  • FACT: Stress can cause hair production to shut down temporarily. But stress in itself doesn’t cause male pattern baldness

Common myths about hair loss:

The hair loss gene comes from my mum’s family:

FALSE. Hereditary hair loss can be passed on by either parent, although it’s true, the strongest influence is on the maternal side. The gene or genes responsible for this have not yet been identified and the pattern of inheritance is complex.

Regaine contains the only active ingredient clinically proven to regrow hair:

TRUE. Regaine contains minoxidil, which originally showed signs of its ability to re-grow hair when studied for other indications in the 1980’s. To this day minoxidil is the only clinically proven Over-The-Counter treatment for hair loss.

If you wash your hair too often you will go bald:

FALSE. Frequent shampooing has no effect, positive or negative, on hereditary hair loss. But it is important to take good care of the hair you have.

If I colour my hair, it’ll fall out faster:

FALSE. Many hair treatments, such as bleaching and colouring, can be hard on your hair. If the treatments are too strong, they may cause the hair to break off near the scalp, but no treatments will cause hereditary hair loss.

Blow-drying can cause hair loss:

FALSE. But it can dry, burn and damage hairs that may then fall out. If you're suffering from hereditary hair loss, the new hairs that grow are often thinner and less visible than the ones they are replacing.

Losing an average of 40 - 100 hairs a day is normal – they just grow back again:

TRUE. This is true for people who don't have male pattern baldness, and the hairs that fall out will soon be replaced by new ones. If you're suffering from hereditary hair loss, those hairs often come from follicles that are shrinking and the new hairs emerging from these follicles will be thinner. Eventually the follicles shut down and no longer produce any hairs at all.

I can increase the number of follicles on my scalp by using drugs:

FALSE. There is currently no drug on the market that will alter the quantity of hair follicles on your head. The number of hair follicles you have is completely out of your control – it's hereditary.

Cutting or shaving my hair will make it grow back thicker and faster:

FALSE. Hair grows at an average rate of half an inch per month. Each hair shaft is slightly thicker at its base compared to its tip, so hair can appear thicker for about a week after it’s been cut. However, cutting hair has absolutely no effect on each hair's thickness or the number of hairs that will sprout from the follicles.

What can I do about it?

How does Regaine work?

Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Regaine, reinvigorates shrunken hair follicles – they increase in size and regrow thicker hair over time.

Regaine Foam and Solution contain the active ingredient minoxidil, the only over-the-counter treatment clinically proven to help prevent further hair loss. Using Regaine twice daily can even reverse the process, resulting in regrowth.

Minoxidil works by helping the blood flow to the hair follicles and increasing follicular size and hair shaft diameter, stimulating and prolonging hair growth. It has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and help stimulate regrowth for a thicker, fuller head of hair.

Regaine works best in men with recent hair loss or thinning at the top of the scalp but can be used by Men with a receding hair line, as this is typically an early stage of hereditary hair loss.

What can I expect?

Week 1: Apply Regaine twice a day - once in the morning and then again at night.

Week 2: By now you may be noticing some shedding but this is normal and a good thing - this means that the Regaine is working. In order to regrow thicker and fuller hair, Regaine needs to push out the unhealthy, weaker hair. This shouldn't last more than 2 weeks.

Week 3: By week 3 so should probably be near the end of your can so it is advisable to replace it in order to advoid missing a day.

Week 8: It is possible that you may start to see some early regrowth. If not, don't worry. Keep doing what you are doing and it should come. If you don't see any regrowth, be sure to check other positive signs that Regaine is working. For example, you may be seeing less hair on your bed, pillow or in the shower drain.

Week 12: You should now be seeing regrowth. If not, keep going. Remember, everyone's results will vary. It is quite normal for you to notice little improvement until four months in.

Week 16: At week 16, 9 out of 10 men who used Regaine Foam twice a day in a clinical study said they kept or regrew their hair.

If you have seen results then, even after four months of using Regaine, you can continue to experience hair regrowth. So don't stop. If you do your hair will be back to what it was before your started using Regaine.

If you haven't experienced any improvement (hair regrowth or no further hair loss) after using Regaine Foam twice daily for 16 weeks, you should discontinue further use (or after 1 year of using Regaine Extra Strength Solution twice daily).

What to expect: Two to six weeks after starting treatment, you may notice that you are losing more hair than before you started the treatment. Don't let this worry you – this is completely normal and a positive sign that the treatment is working. It's caused by your hair follicles shifting from a dormant phase to an active growing phase: as new hair growth begins, your old hairs are released and fall out.

Continue to use Regaine for Women twice a day, as directed, and your hair thinning should stabilise. And if you are looking for regrowth, some women see results in as little as sixteen weeks. But don't be disappointed if it takes longer; everyone is different and the effects vary from user to user.

If your hair starts to regrow, it will probably be soft, downy and barely visible. After continued treatment, this new hair should become the same colour and thickness as the rest of their hair.
