Important Warnings for Calpol SixPlus Sugar Free Suspension
Do not exceed the stated dose. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of overdose, even if you feel well, due to the risk of delayed serious liver damage. Do not take with other products containing paracetamol.
Do not give this medicine to your child if:
- They have ever had a bad reaction to any of the ingredients.
- They are taking anything else with paracetamol in it.
- They are under 6 years old (ask your pharmacist to recommend a suitable product).
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if:
- Your child has serious kidney or liver problems.
- Your child has an inherited intolerance to fructose or has been diagnosed with an intolerance to some other sugars.
- You have severe illnesses, including severe renal impairment or sepsis.
- You suffer from malnutrition or chronic alcoholism.
- You are taking flucloxacillin (an antibiotic). A serious condition called metabolic acidosis (a blood and fluid abnormality) has been reported in patients in these situations when paracetamol is used at regular doses for a prolonged period or when paracetamol is taken together with flucloxacillin. Symptoms of metabolic acidosis may include: serious breathing difficulties with deep rapid breathing, drowsiness, feeling sick (nausea) and being sick (vomiting).
- Your child is not getting better or needs more medicine than shown in the table.
- Your child gets a rash, breathing problems, diarrhoea, or gets very tired.
Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:
- Metoclopramide or domperidone (used to treat nausea and vomiting)
- Cholestyramine (used to treat high cholesterol)
- Anticoagulants (drugs that thin the blood, such as warfarin)
- Anticonvulsants (drugs to treat epilepsy)
If adults take this medicine:
- You can use this medicine while taking oral contraceptives ('the pill'), but it may not work as well on pain or fever.
- If you drink large amounts of alcohol, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
- If necessary, the medicine can be used during pregnancy, but use the lowest possible dose for the shortest time. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if pain/fever is not reduced or if you need to take it more often.
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
Some ingredients can cause problems:
- Methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoate may cause allergic reactions.
- Sorbitol (E420) and maltitol: This product is unsuitable for people with inherited intolerance to fructose. It contains 1935 mg of sorbitol liquid (E420) per 5 ml dose and 2.04 g maltitol liquid. Sorbitol may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and a mild laxative effect. Maltitol may also have a mild laxative effect.
- Propylene glycol (E1520): Contains 20.92 mg per 5 ml dose.
- Benzyl alcohol: Contains 0.05 mg per 5 ml dose. May cause allergic reactions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a liver or kidney disease.
Possible side-effects:
Calpol SixPlus Sugar Free Suspension can have side-effects, though these are usually mild. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of these:
- Allergic reactions including swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, rash or hives.
- Becoming unusually tired, unexpected bruising or bleeding and getting more infections (such as colds) than usual.
- Very rare cases of serious skin reactions: skin reddening, blisters, rash. Stop use and seek medical help right away if these occur or worsen.
- A serious condition that can make blood more acidic (metabolic acidosis), in patients with severe illness using paracetamol.
Long term use of paracetamol is not intended. People who use medicines containing paracetamol every day for several months or more could get liver and kidney damage.
