Periactin Anti-Histamine Tablets contains cyproheptadine, an effective antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine and serotonin, natural substances in your body that can cause unwanted symptoms during allergic reactions. As a first-generation antihistamine, it is known for its ability to provide comprehensive relief across various conditions.

Targeted Relief for Multiple Conditions

Periactin Anti-Histamine Tablets are commonly used for:

• Skin Allergies: Helping to relieve itchiness, swelling, and redness associated with conditions like eczema or nettle rash.
• Insect Bites and Stings: Reducing the itchiness and discomfort from reactions to insect bites and stings.
• Hayfever and Allergic Rhinitis: Alleviating sneezing, watery eyes, and a blocked or runny nose caused by seasonal or perennial allergies.
• Allergic Conjunctivitis: Calming red, watery, and inflamed eyes due to allergies.
• Migraine and Other Headaches: Providing relief for certain types of headaches, including migraine.
• Chickenpox Itch: Reducing the intense itchiness associated with chickenpox.

Periactin is to be taken orally under the following instructions:

For allergies

Adults and children over 14 years:

• Start with 1 tablet three times a day.
• Most patients need 3-4 tablets a day.
• Do not take more than 8 tablets a day.

Children aged 7-14 years:

• The usual dose is 1 tablet two or three times a day as needed.
• If you need to give an extra dose, give it at bedtime.
• Do not give more than 4 tablets a day.

Children aged 2-6 years:

• The usual dose is half a tablet two or three times a day.
• If you need to give an extra dose, give it at bedtime.
• Do not give more than 3 tablets a day.

For migraine

• Take 1 tablet when you are getting the migraine
• Take another one, if needed, after 30 minutes.
• Then take 1 tablet every 4-6 hours to maintain relief.
• Do not take more than 2 tablets in any 4-6 hour period.

Children under 2 years

• Do not give Periactin to children under 2 years of age.

Do not take Periactin if:

• You are allergic (hypersensitive) to cyproheptadine or any of the other ingredients of Periactin.
• You are taking a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) for depression, such as meclobemide, phenelzine, tranylcypramine, linezolid or pargyline.
• You have a narrowing of the opening from the stomach (‘stricture')
• You have an eye problem called ‘glaucoma'
• You are being treated for an asthmatic attack
• You are elderly and not very mobile
• You have problems passing urine
• You have a stomach ulcer.
• You have rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
• You wish to use Periactin to treat lower respiratory tract symptoms, including those of acute asthma.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Periactin if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You are taking MAO inhibitors, alcohol or CNS depressants (e.g. hypnotics, sedatives, tranquillisers and antianxiety agents), medicines for anxiety (e.g . diazepam, alprazolam).
• Drugs with anti-serotonin activity, such as cyproheptadine.
• You have a history of bronchial asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension.
• You wish to engage in activities requiring motor coordination and mental alertness, such as driving a car or operating machinery.
• You have high blood pressure or heart problems.
• You have been told by your doctor that you cannot tolerate or digest some sugars (have an intolerance to some sugars).

Not to be administered to children under the age of two.

Antihistamines may diminish mental alertness; conversely, particularly in the young child, they may occasionally produce excitation.

Overdosage of antihistamines, particularly in infants and children, may produce severe side effects.

• The active substance is cyproheptadine hydrochloride. Each Periactin tablet contains 4 mg anhydrous cyproheptadine hydrochloride.
• The other ingredients are calcium hydrogen phosphate E341, lactose, magnesium stearate E572, potato starch, pregelatinised maize starch.
