Condoms & Contraceptives

Condoms are thin sheaths, usually made from latex or polyurethane, worn over the penis during sex. They work by creating a barrier that prevents sperm from entering the vagina, reducing the risk of pregnancy. They also help prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

When used correctly every time you have sex, condoms are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. With typical use (including incorrect or inconsistent use), effectiveness is around 85%.

Condoms are very safe when used correctly. They are medically tested and regulated in the UK. Always check the expiry date and ensure the packaging is intact before use.

Yes, condoms do expire. Most condoms have a shelf life of around 3–5 years, depending on the brand and storage conditions. Always check the expiry date on the packet and avoid storing condoms in places exposed to heat or friction (such as wallets for long periods).

No. Condoms should not be flushed down the toilet as they can cause blockages. Wrap them in tissue and dispose of them in a bin.

Condoms themselves do not cause thrush, but some individuals may react to latex or certain lubricants. If irritation occurs, consider latex-free condoms or speak to a healthcare professional.
