Malaria is a major killer. According to the World Health Organisation there were 207 million cases of malaria worldwide in 2012 and 627,000 deaths. Luckily, malaria is not found in the UK, but 1400 people were diagnosed with the disease in 2012 following travel to areas where it is present.
Malaria is found in more than 100 countries around the world, mainly tropical regions, and including:
- Large areas of Africa and Asia
- Central and South America
- Dominican Republic
- Parts of the Middle East
- Some Pacific Islands
Many cases of the disease can be avoided with sensible precautions and antimalarials, if necessary.
