What Is the Wegovy Tablet?
The Wegovy tablet is a once-daily oral semaglutide tablet — containing the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection. It was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on 11 June 2026, making it the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist licensed for weight management in the UK.
Manufactured by Novo Nordisk (the same company behind Wegovy injections, Ozempic, and Rybelsus), the Wegovy tablet works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone your body naturally produces. It activates receptors in the brain to reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness, and slow how quickly food leaves your stomach — helping you feel satisfied on less food.
How Does the Wegovy Tablet Work?
You might wonder how a tablet can deliver semaglutide when your stomach would normally break it down before it can be absorbed. The answer is clever science: the semaglutide in Wegovy tablets is combined with a carrier molecule called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate), which protects it just long enough to be absorbed through the stomach lining and into the bloodstream. Once there, it works exactly like the injection.
For best results, Wegovy tablets must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than 120ml of plain water, and you must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines.
Is the Wegovy Tablet the Same as Rybelsus?
Both are oral semaglutide tablets made by Novo Nordisk, but they are different products with different licences. Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes management and is available in doses up to 14mg. Wegovy tablets are licensed specifically for weight management and include a higher 25mg maintenance dose not available in Rybelsus. Some people refer to these as the Wegovy pill — but they are the same product.
Wegovy Tablet Dosing Schedule
Like all GLP-1 weight loss treatments, Wegovy tablets use a gradual dose titration — you start low and increase slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimise side effects. Your pharmacist will advise when it's appropriate to move to the next dose based on your progress and tolerance.
| Dose | When | Duration | Price (30 tablets) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5mg | Starting dose — Month 1 | Days 1–30 | Confirmed at launch |
| 4mg | Month 2 | Days 31–60 | Confirmed at launch |
| 9mg | Month 3 | Days 61–90 | Confirmed at launch |
| 25mg | Maintenance — Month 4 onwards | Day 91 onwards | Confirmed at launch |
Switching from the Wegovy Injection to the Tablet
If you are already using the Wegovy injection and want to switch to the daily tablet, our pharmacists can guide you through this. The process below applies to those stabilised on the maximum 2.4mg weekly injection. If you are on a lower dose, your pharmacist will match you to the appropriate introductory tablet strength instead.
Administer your final weekly 2.4mg Wegovy injection exactly as scheduled.
Observe the standard 7-day gap. The injected semaglutide will slowly clear your system at its normal rate.
On the day you would normally take your next injection, do not use the pen. Instead, take your first 25mg Wegovy tablet first thing in the morning, beginning your new daily fasting routine.

- Take first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before eating, drinking (other than plain water), or taking any other oral medication.
- Swallow whole with up to 120ml of plain still water. Do not use sparkling water, juice, coffee, tea, or other drinks.
