Body Butter FAQs
What is a body butter and what is it used for?
A body butter is a rich, concentrated moisturiser made primarily from plant oils, waxes and fats such as shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil. Unlike body lotions and creams, body butters contain little or no water, which makes them particularly effective at sealing moisture into the skin and providing long-lasting hydration. They are best used on very dry skin, problem areas, and anywhere the skin feels particularly rough or tight.
When is the best time to apply body butter?
Body butter is most effective when applied to slightly damp skin immediately after bathing or showering. The butter forms a seal over the skin, locking in the moisture that is already present on the skin's surface. If you want to use body butter as an overnight treatment, apply a generous amount to very dry areas — such as elbows, knees and heels — before bed, and allow it to absorb fully while you sleep.
How is a body butter different from a body lotion or cream?
Body lotions are the lightest of the three — water-based and fast-absorbing, ideal for everyday use on normal to slightly dry skin. Body creams are richer and thicker, containing a higher ratio of oils to water, and are better suited to dry skin. Body butters are the richest option, containing little to no water and a high concentration of oils and plant butters, making them the most intensive treatment and best suited to very dry skin and targeted problem areas.
Are body butters suitable for sensitive skin?
It depends on the formula. Some body butters contain fragrance or essential oils that can irritate sensitive skin. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, look for fragrance-free or naturally fragranced options with short, clean ingredient lists. My Trusty Sunflower Body Butter is a good option for sensitive skin — it is dermatologically tested, paediatrician-approved and suitable for eczema-prone skin, and is fragranced only with natural essential oils.
Can body butters be used on the face?
Body butters are generally too rich and heavy for everyday facial use and may block pores, particularly on normal to oily skin. However, they can be useful on very dry patches on the face — such as around the nose and chin — when used sparingly. For regular facial moisturising, always use a product specifically formulated for the face.
