How To Stop Smoking, For Good

Thinking of quitting smoking? You're not alone. The NHS reports that most smokers in the UK want to stop. While we know it's a significant challenge, it's also one of the best things you can do for your health. Our Weldricks Pharmacy team is here to help you every step of the way, providing professional, friendly advice and support to help you kick the habit for good.

Why is Quitting So Hard? Understanding Nicotine Addiction

Nicotine is the key reason we become addicted to cigarettes. When you inhale, nicotine is absorbed into your bloodstream and reaches the brain in as little as 7-10 seconds. Here, it acts as a stimulant and a relaxant, affecting the brain's reward and pleasure centres. Over time, your body gets used to having nicotine, making it incredibly difficult to resist. Cravings can be intense, often leading to restlessness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

It's important to remember that nicotine itself isn't the primary cause of harm. The real problem lies with the thousands of chemicals found in the tar and smoke produced by tobacco. Over 60 of these are known to cause cancer, and smoking is a major contributor to serious health issues like lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Your Quitting Journey: Practical Steps and Support

The first 24 hours are often the toughest, and it can take between two and four weeks for the physical addiction to subside. But while the physical cravings are real, it's often the habit of smoking that's the most challenging part. Here’s how you can tackle both the addiction and the habit:

  • **Find Your Motivation:** Be 100% committed to stopping. A great motivator is to think about the financial savings; many people find they save between £1,000 and £2,000 a year by quitting. Imagine what you could do with that extra money!
  • **Tackle Cravings:** Cravings typically last for about 5 minutes. When an urge hits, get up and do something else immediately. Go for a short walk, tidy up a room, or do a crossword puzzle – anything to distract yourself and break the cycle.
  • **Explore Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT):** NRT products can help manage cravings by providing a small, controlled amount of nicotine without the harmful chemicals in cigarettes. Options include patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators, tablets, and nasal sprays. Our pharmacists can help you understand the different options and find a product that suits your lifestyle.
  • **Consider E-Cigarettes:** While not licensed as a medicinal product, e-cigarettes can be a tool to help reduce the harmful effects of tobacco. We can provide guidance on these products, and we ensure our e-cigarettes are sourced from trusted suppliers who meet high safety standards.
