Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml is a veterinary medicinal product prescribed for the effective management of feline hyperthyroidism. This oral solution helps to stabilise your cat's thyroid function, offering crucial support for their long-term health.

Description

Feline hyperthyroidism is a common hormonal disorder in older cats, caused by an overactive thyroid gland producing too much thyroid hormone. This can lead to various symptoms like weight loss despite increased appetite, hyperactivity, excessive thirst, and poor coat condition. Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml is a trusted veterinary prescription medicine designed to manage this condition effectively.

How Felimazole Works

The active ingredient in Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml is Thiamazole, an antithyroid agent. It works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones in your cat's body, helping to bring their hormone levels back into a healthy range. This can significantly improve their quality of life and alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism.

Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml is used both for the stabilisation of hyperthyroidism before surgical removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) and as a long-term treatment for cats where surgery is not an option or desired. Administering this oral solution is straightforward, making it easier for pet owners to manage their cat's ongoing care.

The patient information leaflet states that to enhance stabilisation of the hyperthyroid patient, the same feeding and dosing schedule should be used daily. Is Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml safe for all cats?

Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml is a prescription-only medicine and is not suitable for all cats. Directions

Always follow your veterinary surgeon's specific instructions for administering Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml. The information below is a general guide from the patient information leaflet.

  • Administration: Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution is for oral use only.
  • Starting Dose: The recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day (which is 1 ml of the veterinary medicinal product).
  • Dosing Frequency: Wherever possible, the total daily dose should be divided into two equal doses and administered morning and evening. If once-daily dosing is preferred for compliance, this is acceptable, though twice-daily may be more effective in the short term.
  • Accurate Dosing: Use the syringe provided in the package to administer the dose accurately. The syringe fits onto the bottle and is graduated in 0.25 mg increments up to 5 mg.
  • Method of Administration: Withdraw the required dose and administer the solution directly into your cat's mouth.
  • Monitoring: Blood tests (haematology, biochemistry, and serum total T4) should be assessed before starting treatment and after 3, 6, 10, and 20 weeks, and then every 3 months thereafter. Dose adjustments will be made by your vet based on these results.
  • Dose Adjustments: Adjustments should be made in increments of 2.5 mg (0.5 ml) or, for particularly small adjustments, 1.25 mg (0.25 ml). The aim is to achieve the lowest possible effective dose.
  • Maximum Dose: The dose administered should not exceed 20 mg per day (4 ml of the veterinary medicinal product).
  • Long-Term Treatment: For long-term management of hyperthyroidism, the animal should be treated for life.

Warnings

Please read the following warnings carefully before administering Felimazole 5mg/ml Oral Solution for Cats 30ml. Consult your veterinary surgeon if you have any concerns.

Contraindications: Do not use if your cat is suffering from:

  • Systemic diseases such as primary liver disease or diabetes mellitus.
  • Signs of autoimmune disease.
  • Disorders of white blood cells (e.g., neutropenia, lymphopenia).
  • Platelet disorders or coagulopathies (especially thrombocytopenia).
  • Do not use in pregnant or lactating females.
  • Do not use if your cat has a known hypersensitivity to Thiamazole or any of the excipients.

Special Precautions for Use in Target Species:

  • If more than 10 mg per day (2 ml of the veterinary medicinal product) is required, animals should be monitored particularly carefully.
  • For cats with renal dysfunction, use should be subject to careful risk-benefit assessment by the clinician. Renal function should be monitored closely.
  • Haematology (blood count) must be monitored due to the risk of leucopenia or haemolytic anaemia.
  • If your cat suddenly appears unwell during therapy, especially if febrile, a blood sample should be taken for routine haematology and biochemistry.
  • Neutropenic animals (neutrophil counts <2.5 x 10⁹/litre) should be treated with prophylactic bactericidal antibacterial drugs and supportive therapy.
  • As Thiamazole can cause haemoconcentration, cats should always have access to drinking water.

Adverse Events:

Adverse reactions have been reported, particularly with long-term use. Many signs are mild and temporary and do not usually require withdrawal. More serious effects are generally reversible upon stopping medication.

  • Uncommon (1 to 10 animals / 1,000 treated): Vomiting, anorexia, inappetence, lethargy, pruritus, excoriation, prolonged bleeding, icterus, hepatopathy, eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, neutropenia, lymphopenia, leucopenia (slight), agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia.
  • Rare (1 to 10 animals / 10,000 treated): Autoimmune disorder (serum anti-nuclear antibodies).
  • Very rare (<1 animal / 10,000 treated): Lymphadenopathy, anaemia.

If overdosage occurs, stop treatment and provide symptomatic and supportive care. Signs of overdose can include anorexia, vomiting, lethargy, pruritus, and various haematological and biochemical abnormalities.

Interactions with Other Medicinal Products:

  • Concurrent treatment with phenobarbital may reduce the clinical efficacy of Thiamazole.
  • Thiamazole may increase plasma concentrations of benzimidazole wormers when given concurrently.
  • Thiamazole is immunomodulatory, which should be considered during vaccination programmes.

Special Precautions for the Person Administering the Product:

  • Thiamazole is a suspected human teratogen (can cause birth defects) and is excreted in breast milk. Women of child-bearing age and lactating women must wear non-permeable single-use gloves when handling the veterinary medicinal product, vomit, or used litter of treated animals.
  • If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are attempting to conceive, you should not administer the veterinary medicinal product or handle the litter/vomit of treated cats.
  • This product can cause allergic reactions after skin contact. Do not handle if you are allergic to Thiamazole or any excipients. If allergic symptoms (skin rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing) develop, seek medical attention immediately and show the package insert to the physician.
  • This product may cause skin and eye irritation. Avoid skin and eye contact, including hand-to-eye contact. In case of accidental skin and/or eye contact, rinse exposed skin and/or eyes immediately with clean running water. If irritation develops, seek medical advice.
  • Avoid oral exposure, especially by children.
  • Do not leave filled syringes unattended.
  • Replace the cap immediately after filling the syringe.
  • Wash hands with soap and water after handling vomit or used litter of treated animals.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product, vomit, or used litter.
  • Following administration, wipe any residual product from the dosing syringe tip with a tissue and dispose of it immediately. Store the used syringe with the product in its original carton.
  • In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package insert or label to the physician.
  • Wash hands after use.
