Description

Understanding Feline Hyperthyroidism and Felimazole

Feline hyperthyroidism is a common hormonal disorder in older cats, characterised by an overproduction of thyroid hormones. Symptoms can include weight loss despite an increased appetite, hyperactivity, increased thirst and urination, and a poor coat condition. Early and effective management is key to maintaining your cat's quality of life.

Felimazole 1 Tablet For Cats 1.25mg is indicated for two primary uses:

  • Pre-Surgical Stabilisation: It helps to stabilise hyperthyroidism in cats before surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
  • Long-Term Management: It can be used as a long-term treatment option for feline hyperthyroidism, offering ongoing control of the condition.

The active substance, thiamazole, works by reducing the production of thyroid hormones in the body, bringing the levels back into a healthy range. As a prescription-only veterinary medicine, Felimazole 1 Tablet For Cats 1.25mg must be prescribed by a vet who will determine the appropriate dosage and treatment plan for your cat.

Special Precautions for Use in Target Species (Cats):

  • If more than 10 mg per day is required, animals should be monitored particularly carefully.
  • Use in cats with renal dysfunction should be subject to careful benefit-risk assessment by the clinician, as thiamazole can reduce the glomerular filtration rate. Renal function must be monitored closely.

  • If an animal suddenly appears unwell during therapy, especially if febrile, a blood sample should be taken for routine haematology and biochemistry.

Special Precautions to be taken by the Person Administering the Veterinary Medicinal Product:

  • Wash hands thoroughly after use.
  • In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or label to the physician. Thiamazole may cause symptoms such as vomiting, headache, fever, and pruritus. Treatment is symptomatic.
  • Wash hands with soap and water after handling litter used by treated animals.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the tablet or used litter.

  • Do not break or crush tablets.
  • As thiamazole is a suspected human teratogen, women of child-bearing age and pregnant women should wear gloves when handling litter from treated cats and when handling the veterinary medicinal product itself.
