Taking too much Bisacodyl or taking it for too long may be harmful and can lead to:
- A 'lazy bowel', where bowel muscles become too relaxed, leading to infrequent emptying and long-term constipation.
- An imbalance of fluid and salts in the body, which can affect muscle tightness and blood salts.
- Low levels of potassium in the blood (hypo-kalaemia), which can cause tiredness, dizziness, muscle weakness, and an uneven heart-beat.
- Dehydration, leading to thirst, faintness, headaches, and reduced urine output.
Possible side effects: Like all medicines, Bisacodyl Tablets BP 5 mg Pack of 20 can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Prolonged use can lead to 'lazy bowels' and further severe constipation. Other possible side effects include low blood potassium (hypokalaemia), gripping pains, and abdominal cramps. If you experience any of these or other unusual changes, contact your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects via the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard.
