Prazitel Plus Tablets for Dogs are a worming treatment for mixed infections with roundworms and tapeworms in dogs. Each tablet contains praziquantel 50mg, pyrantel 50mg (as 144mg pyrantel embonate) and febantel 150mg, given as a single dose of 1 tablet per 10kg bodyweight for dogs from 0.5kg. This pack contains 24 tablets.

Description

Prazitel Plus worming tablets for dogs

Prazitel Plus combines three anthelmintics. Pyrantel and febantel act against roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, and praziquantel acts against tapeworms, including Echinococcus, Taenia and Dipylidium caninum. One dose treats a mixed infection of both types of worm.

The dose is worked out by weight: 1 tablet per 10kg bodyweight, from ¼ tablet for a dog of 0.5 to 2.5kg up to 4 tablets for 35.1 to 40kg. With 24 tablets, this pack suits households with more than one dog, or larger dogs that need several tablets per dose.

What Prazitel Plus Tablets for Dogs are used for:

  • Roundworms: Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina (adult and late immature forms).
  • Hookworms: Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum (adults).
  • Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis (adults).
  • Tapeworms: Echinococcus species, Taenia species and Dipylidium caninum (adult and immature forms).
  • Single dose: 1 tablet per 10kg bodyweight, given directly or disguised in food, with no starvation needed.
  • 24 pork-flavoured tablets, divisible into halves or quarters.

Fleas and tapeworm

Fleas carry one common type of tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, so tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless fleas, mice and other intermediate hosts are also controlled. Ask your vet how often your dog should be wormed. See our flea and worm treatments for dogs, our page on worms and our guide to flea and worm treatment for UK pet owners.

FAQ

How many Prazitel Plus tablets does my dog need?

The dose is 1 Prazitel Plus tablet per 10kg bodyweight, given as a single dose: ¼ tablet for 0.5 to 2.5kg, ½ tablet for 2.6 to 5.0kg, 1 tablet for 5.1 to 10.0kg, and so on up to 4 tablets for 35.1 to 40.0kg. Weigh your dog as accurately as possible to get the dose right. For dogs of 17.5kg and over, Prazitel Plus XL tablets are also available.

How often should I give my dog Prazitel Plus?

Prazitel Plus is given as a single dose. Ask your vet whether your dog needs repeat treatment and how often. Frequent, repeated use of an anthelmintic of the same class can lead to parasite resistance.

Why does flea control matter when using Prazitel Plus?

Fleas carry a common type of tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless fleas, mice and other intermediate hosts are also controlled.

Can Prazitel Plus be given to a pregnant dog?

Use of Prazitel Plus during pregnancy should be in accordance with a benefit risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian, so speak to your vet first. Its use is not recommended during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy, and the stated dose should not be exceeded when treating pregnant bitches.

Can Prazitel Plus be given with other wormers?

Do not give Prazitel Plus at the same time as piperazine compounds, as the effects of pyrantel and piperazine may be antagonised. Concurrent use with other cholinergic compounds can lead to toxicity. Check with your vet or pharmacist before combining treatments.

Warnings

Before use

Do not use:

  • Simultaneously with piperazine compounds.
  • In cases of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients.

Special warnings:

  • Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm – Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice, etc. is undertaken.
  • Tapeworm infestation is unlikely in pups less than 6 weeks of age.
  • Parasite resistance to any particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent, repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class.

Precautions for the person giving the tablets:

  • In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or the label to the physician.
  • In the interests of good hygiene, persons administering the tablets directly to the dog, or by adding them to the dog's food, should wash their hands afterwards.

Other precautions: Echinococcosis represents a hazard for humans. As echinococcosis is a notifiable disease to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), specific guidelines on the treatment and follow-up, and on the safeguard of persons, need to be obtained from the relevant competent authority.

Pregnancy: Teratogenic effects attributed to high doses of febantel have been reported in sheep and rats. No studies have been performed in dogs during early pregnancy. Use of the veterinary medicinal product during pregnancy should be in accordance with a benefit risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian. The use is not recommended during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy in dogs. Do not exceed the stated dose when treating pregnant bitches.

Interactions: Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds as the anthelmintic effects of pyrantel and piperazine may be antagonised. Concurrent use with other cholinergic compounds can lead to toxicity.

Side effects and overdose

Side effects: If you notice any side effects, or think the medicine has not worked, contact your vet. Very rare (fewer than 1 animal in 10,000 treated, including isolated reports): digestive tract disorders (diarrhoea, emesis (vomiting)); lethargy, anorexia, hyperactivity.

Overdose: The combination of praziquantel, pyrantel embonate and febantel is well tolerated in dogs. In safety studies, a single dose of 5 times the recommended dose or greater gave rise to occasional vomiting.
