Prazitel Plus XL Tablets for Dogs are a worming treatment for mixed roundworm and tapeworm infections in adult dogs. Each XL tablet contains praziquantel 175mg, pyrantel embonate 504mg (equivalent to 175mg pyrantel) and febantel 525mg, equivalent to 1 tablet per 35kg bodyweight. This pack contains 10 tablets.

Description

Worming tablets for large dogs

Prazitel Plus XL contains the same three anthelmintics as Prazitel Plus, at three and a half times the strength per tablet, so larger dogs need fewer tablets. Pyrantel and febantel act against roundworms, hookworms and whipworms; praziquantel acts against tapeworms, including Echinococcus, Taenia and Dipylidium caninum.

One XL tablet treats 35kg of bodyweight, and the tablet can be halved for a dog of approximately 17.5kg. Dogs over 35kg take one XL tablet plus standard Prazitel Plus tablets at 1 tablet per 10kg for the extra weight, and a 66 to 70kg dog takes two XL tablets.

What Prazitel Plus XL Tablets for Dogs are used for:

  • Adult dogs: treatment of mixed infections by roundworms and tapeworms.
  • Roundworms: Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina (adult and late immature forms).
  • Hookworms: Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum (adults).
  • Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis (adults).
  • Tapeworms: Echinococcus species, Taenia species and Dipylidium caninum (adult and immature forms).
  • 1 XL tablet per 35kg bodyweight, with a breakline on both sides for halving.
  • 10 pork-flavoured tablets, given directly or disguised in food.

Keeping worms from coming back

Fleas carry one common type of tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, so tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless fleas, mice and other intermediate hosts are also controlled. If there is a risk of re-infestation, ask your vet how often to treat. See our flea and worm treatments for dogs and our page on worms.

Warnings

Before use

Do not use:

  • Simultaneously with piperazine compounds.
  • In animals with a known sensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients.

Special warnings:

  • Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm – Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice, etc. is undertaken.
  • Care should be taken to avoid the following practices because they increase the risk of development of resistance and could ultimately result in ineffective therapy: too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics from the same class, over an extended period of time; underdosing, which may be due to underestimation of body weight, misadministration of the product.

Precautions for the person giving the tablets: In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or the label to the physician. In the interests of good hygiene, persons administering the tablets directly to the dog, or by adding them to the dog's food, should wash their hands afterwards.

Other precautions: Echinococcosis represents a hazard for humans. As echinococcosis is a notifiable disease to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), specific guidelines on the treatment and follow-up, and on the safeguard of persons, need to be obtained from the relevant competent authority.

Pregnancy: Teratogenic effects attributed to high doses of febantel have been reported in sheep and rats. No studies have been performed in dogs during early pregnancy. Use of the product during pregnancy should be in accordance with a benefit risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian. It is recommended that the product is not used in dogs during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. Do not exceed the stated dose when treating pregnant bitches.

Interactions: Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds as the anthelmintic effects of pyrantel and piperazine may be antagonized. Concurrent use with other cholinergic compounds can lead to toxicity.

Side effects and overdose

Side effects: If you notice any side effects, contact your vet. Very rare (fewer than 1 animal in 10,000 treated, including isolated reports): digestive tract disorders (diarrhoea, emesis); lethargy, anorexia, hyperactivity.

Overdose: The combination of praziquantel, pyrantel embonate and febantel is well tolerated in dogs. In safety studies, a single dose of 5 times the recommended dose or greater gave rise to occasional vomiting.
