FAQ

What is Prinocate Spot-on-Solution Small Dog 40/10mg used for?

Prinocate Spot-on-Solution Small Dog 40/10mg is a veterinary medicinal product used for the prevention and treatment of mixed parasitic infections in small dogs weighing less than 4kg. It treats fleas, ear mites, various types of worms including heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, lungworm, and eye worm, as well as sarcoptic mange and cutaneous dirofilariosis.

How often should I apply Prinocate Spot-on-Solution to my small dog?

For flea and heartworm prevention, Prinocate Spot-on-Solution Small Dog 40/10mg is typically applied monthly. For other conditions like ear mites or sarcoptic mange, the dosage frequency may vary. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your veterinarian as this is a Prescription Only Medicine - Vet (POM-V).

Can Prinocate Spot-on-Solution be used on puppies?

No, Prinocate Spot-on-Solution should not be used in puppies under 7 weeks of age. For puppies older than 7 weeks but weighing less than 1kg, its use should be based on a careful benefit-risk assessment by your veterinarian.

What should I do if my dog licks the application site after treatment?

If your dog licks the application site immediately after treatment, it may taste bitter and cause salivation, which is usually transient and not a sign of intoxication. In very rare cases, neurological signs may occur. To minimise licking, ensure correct application and distract your dog if necessary. If you are concerned, contact your veterinarian.

Directions

How to Apply Prinocate Spot-on-Solution

Ensure your dog is standing still during application. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove one pipette from the package. Hold the applicator pipette in an upright position.
  2. Twist and pull the cap off.
  3. Turn the cap around and place the other end of the cap back onto the pipette.
  4. Push and twist the cap to break the seal, then remove the cap from the pipette.
  5. Part the coat between your dog's shoulder blades until the skin is visible.
  6. Apply the product only to undamaged skin. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin.

Dosage for Small Dogs (<4kg)

For Prinocate 40mg/10mg spot-on solution for small dogs (<4kg), administer a single dose containing 40mg Imidacloprid and 10mg Moxidectin (0.4ml volume).

Treatment Schedule

  • Flea Treatment and Prevention: One treatment prevents future flea infestation for 4 weeks. Administer at monthly intervals, especially as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis. Consider environmental treatments for existing pupae.
  • Ear Mite Infestation (Otodectes cynotis): Administer a single dose. Loose debris should be gently removed. A veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended as a second treatment may be required. Do not apply directly to the ear canal.
  • Sarcoptic Mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis): Administer a single dose twice, 4 weeks apart.
  • Heartworm Prevention (Dirofilaria immitis) and Cutaneous Dirofilariosis (skinworm) (D. repens): Apply at regular monthly intervals during the mosquito season. Treatment should continue until 1 month after the last exposure to mosquitoes. For existing heartworm infection, a risk-benefit analysis by your vet is required.
  • Microfilariae (D. immitis): Administer monthly for two consecutive months.
  • Cutaneous Dirofilariosis (skin worm) (adult stages of Dirofilaria repens): Administer monthly for six consecutive months.
  • Reduction of Microfilariae (skin worm) (D. repens): Administer monthly for four consecutive months.
  • Treatment and Prevention of Angiostrongylus vasorum: Administer a single dose. A further vet exam 30 days later is recommended. Regular monthly applications prevent angiostrongylosis in endemic areas.
  • Treatment of Crenosoma vulpis, Eucoleus (syn. Capillaria) boehmi (adults), Thelazia callipaeda (adults): Administer a single dose. For Eucoleus boehmi, administer monthly for two consecutive months, preventing auto-coprophagia.
  • Roundworm, Hookworm, and Whipworm Treatment: Monthly treatment significantly reduces the risk of re-infection in endemic areas. In non-endemic areas, it can be part of a seasonal prevention programme.

  • Rarely, greasy hair, erythema, and vomiting can occur; these signs usually disappear without further treatment.
  • Local hypersensitivity reactions may occur rarely.
  • If the animal licks the application site: neurological signs (transient) may be observed very rarely. The product tastes bitter, and salivation may occur occasionally; this is not a sign of intoxication and disappears shortly. Correct application minimises licking.
  • Very rarely, application site sensation may lead to transient behavioural changes like lethargy, agitation, and inappetence.
  • In heartworm-positive dogs with microfilaraemia, severe respiratory signs (coughing, tachypnea, dyspnea) may occur, requiring prompt veterinary treatment. Gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence) and lethargy are also common adverse reactions in such dogs.
