Description

Dog worming tablets for routine worm control

Ridaworm Plus combines praziquantel, pyrantel and febantel to treat roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms in a single dose. For routine worm control, adult dogs should be treated every 3 months, and a single dose is recommended each time.

Puppies need worming more often: at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age, then at 3 month intervals. It is advisable to treat the bitch at the same time as the puppies, and to control Toxocara, nursing bitches should be dosed 2 weeks after giving birth and every two weeks until weaning.

What Ridaworm Plus Tablets for Dogs are used for:

  • Roundworms: Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina (adult and late immature forms).
  • Hookworms: Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum (adults).
  • Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis (adults).
  • Tapeworms: Echinococcus species, Taenia species and Dipylidium caninum (adult and immature forms).
  • For dogs and puppies weighing 3kg or more: ½ tablet for 3 to 5kg, up to 4 tablets for over 35 up to 40kg.
  • 2 pork-flavoured tablets, which can be divided into halves or quarters.

Fleas and tapeworm

Fleas carry one common type of tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, so tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless fleas, mice and other intermediate hosts are also controlled. If you suspect a heavy roundworm infestation, contact your vet. See our flea and worm treatments for dogs and our guide to flea and worm treatment for UK pet owners.

FAQ

How often should adult dogs be wormed with Ridaworm Plus?

For routine worm control, adult dogs should be treated every 3 months, with a single dose each time. If you suspect a heavy roundworm infestation, contact your vet for diagnosis and treatment advice.

How often should puppies be wormed with Ridaworm Plus?

Puppies should be treated at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age, then at 3 month intervals. Ridaworm Plus is not for use in dogs weighing less than 3kg or less than 2 weeks of age.

Can Ridaworm Plus be given to a pregnant or nursing dog?

Consult a vet before treating a pregnant dog: use during pregnancy should follow a benefit risk assessment by the vet, and Ridaworm Plus is not recommended during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. It may be used in nursing bitches from two weeks after giving birth.

How many Ridaworm Plus tablets does my dog need?

The dose is 1 Ridaworm Plus tablet per 10kg bodyweight: ½ tablet for 3 to 5kg, 1 tablet for over 5 up to 10kg, and up to 4 tablets for over 35 up to 40kg. Weigh your dog as accurately as possible to get the dose right.

Can Ridaworm Plus be given with other worming products?

Do not use Ridaworm Plus at the same time as piperazine compounds, which may block the action of the pyrantel embonate it contains; other worming products may contain piperazine. Do not use it with other deworming products without veterinary advice.

Warnings

Before use

Do not use:

  • Simultaneously with piperazine compounds as piperazine may block the action of pyrantel embonate contained in this product. Other worming products may contain piperazine.
  • Simultaneously with other deworming products without veterinary advice.
  • In animals with a known sensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients.
  • In dogs weighing less than 3 kg or less than 2 weeks of age.

Special warnings:

  • Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm – Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infestation is certain to reoccur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice, etc. is undertaken.
  • Tapeworm infestation is unlikely in pups less than 6 weeks of age.
  • Parasite resistance to any particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent, repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class.

Precautions for use in dogs: Do not exceed the stated dose, especially when treating pregnant bitches.

Precautions for the person giving the tablets: In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice and show the package leaflet to the physician. In the interests of good hygiene, persons administering the tablets directly to the dog, or by adding them to the dog's food, should wash their hands afterwards. Echinococcosis represents a hazard for humans. As echinococcosis is a notifiable disease to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), specific guidelines on the treatment and follow-up, and on the safeguard of persons, need to be obtained from the relevant competent authority.

Pregnancy and lactation: Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals. Teratogenic effects attributed to high doses of febantel have been reported in sheep and rats. No studies have been performed in dogs during early pregnancy. Use of the product during pregnancy should be in accordance with a benefit risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian. It is recommended that the product is not used in dogs during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. The product may be used in lactating bitches from two weeks after giving birth.

Interactions: Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds. Concurrent use with other cholinergic compounds can lead to toxicity.

Side effects and overdose

Side effects: In very rare cases (fewer than 1 animal in 10,000), slight and transient digestive tract disorders such as vomiting and/or diarrhoea may occur. In individual cases these signs can be accompanied by nonspecific signs such as lethargy, anorexia or hyperactivity. If you notice any side effects, contact your vet.

Overdose: The combination of praziquantel, pyrantel embonate and febantel is well tolerated in dogs. In safety studies, a single dose of 5 times the recommended dose or greater gave rise to occasional vomiting.
