Bravecto Plus 500 mg / 25 mg Spot-on Solution for Large Cats (6.25 - 12.5kg) offers comprehensive, long-lasting protection for your feline friend. This powerful, veterinary prescription-only treatment delivers 12 weeks of effective defence against a wide range of common parasites, ensuring your large cat stays healthy and happy.

Description

Complete Protection for Your Large Cat

Bravecto Plus Spot-on contains two highly effective active ingredients: fluralaner and moxidectin. Together, these provide broad-spectrum protection against both external and internal parasites for up to 12 weeks. This means fewer treatments for you to administer and continuous peace of mind for your cat's well-being. As a veterinary medicine, Bravecto Plus requires a prescription from your vet, ensuring your cat receives appropriate and safe care.

Targeting Fleas and Ticks

Fluralaner is a potent acaricide and insecticide that is systemically active against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Once applied, it starts killing fleas and ticks within 48 hours and provides continuous protection for 12 weeks. For the product to be effective, fleas and ticks must attach to the host and commence feeding, exposing them to the active substance.

Protecting your cat from these common external parasites is crucial, especially as they can lead to discomfort, skin issues, and even transmit diseases. Learn more about keeping your feline friend free from these pests on our Flea and Worm Treatment for Cats page and explore easy ways to protect your cat from fleas.

Defence Against Internal Parasites

In addition to external parasites, Bravecto Plus Spot-on offers robust protection against several internal threats thanks to moxidectin. This includes treatment for:

  • Ear Mites: Effectively treats infestations with ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), helping to relieve irritation and discomfort.
  • Gastrointestinal Nematodes: Treats infections with intestinal roundworm (Toxocara cati) and hookworm (Ancylostoma tubaeforme).
  • Heartworm Prevention: Continuously prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis when administered at 12-week intervals.
  • Lungworm Prevention: Prevents the establishment of adult lungworms responsible for clinical aelurostrongylosis (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus).

By offering protection against such a wide array of parasites, Bravecto Plus helps maintain your cat's overall health and prevents potential serious health issues.

Easy and Effective Application

Applying Bravecto Plus is straightforward and convenient. The spot-on solution is applied directly to your cat's skin at the base of the skull, ensuring it is absorbed effectively. For larger cats within this weight range, the application might involve two spots to ensure proper distribution. With a single application providing 12 weeks of protection, it reduces the frequency of treatments compared to daily or monthly options, making pet care simpler for you and less stressful for your cat.

Directions

Amount to be Administered

Bravecto Plus is for spot-on use. The veterinary medicinal product is available in three pipette sizes, and for large cats (6.25 – 12.5 kg), one whole pipette of Bravecto Plus 500 mg + 25 mg spot-on solution should be used. For cats weighing more than 12.5 kg, a combination of two pipettes that most closely matches the body weight should be used. Underdosing may lead to ineffective use and favour resistance development.

Method of Administration

  1. Step 1: Immediately before use, open the sachet and remove the pipette. Put on gloves. The pipette should be held by the base or by the upper rigid portion below the cap in an upright position (tip up) for opening it. The twist-and-use cap should be rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise one full turn. The cap will stay on the pipette; it is not possible to remove it. The pipette is open and ready for application when the breaking of the seal is felt.
  2. Step 2: The cat should be standing or lying with its back horizontal for easy application. Place the pipette tip on the base of the skull of the cat.
  3. Step 3: Squeeze the pipette gently and apply the entire contents directly to the cat's skin. For cats greater than 6.25 kg body weight, the veterinary medicinal product should be applied in two spots at the base of the skull.

Treatment Schedule

  • Ear Mites (Otodectes cynotis): A single dose should be applied. A follow-up veterinary examination (otoscopy) 28 days after treatment is recommended to check for re-infestation.
  • Gastrointestinal Nematodes (Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma tubaeforme): A single dose should be applied. The need for and frequency of re-treatment should be based on professional veterinary advice, considering the local epidemiological situation and the animal's lifestyle. Re-treatment can be done at 12-week intervals if necessary.
  • Heartworm Disease (Dirofilaria immitis) Prevention: For continuous prevention, cats need to be re-treated at 12-week intervals. If cats are in heartworm endemic areas (or have travelled to them), those 6 months of age or older should be tested for existing adult heartworm infections before treatment. For temporary prevention, apply before expected exposure to mosquitoes and continue at 12-week intervals until returning to a non-endemic area (period not to exceed 60 days).
  • Lungworm (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus) Prevention: To prevent the establishment of adult lungworms, cats need to be re-treated at 12-week intervals.

Warnings

Contraindications

  • Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance (fluralaner or moxidectin) or to any of the excipients.

Special Warnings for Each Target Species

  • Ticks and fleas must attach to the host and commence feeding to be exposed to fluralaner; therefore, the risk of parasite-borne disease transmission cannot be excluded.
  • Cats in areas endemic for heartworm (or those that have travelled) may be infected with adult heartworms. No therapeutic effect against adult Dirofilaria immitis has been established. It is recommended that cats 6 months of age or older in endemic areas be tested for existing adult heartworm infections before applying the product for heartworm prevention.
  • For temporary heartworm prevention in endemic areas, apply before the first expected mosquito exposure and continue at 12-week intervals until return to a non-endemic area (not exceeding 60 days).
  • For ear mites and gastrointestinal nematodes, the need for and frequency of re-treatment should be evaluated by a prescribing veterinarian.
  • Unnecessary use of antiparasitics or use deviating from instructions may increase resistance selection pressure.
  • Other animals in the household can be a source of re-infection with fleas, ear mites or gastrointestinal nematodes and should be treated if necessary.
  • Avoid frequent swimming or shampooing the animal, as effectiveness has not been tested in these cases.
  • No therapeutic effect against adult Aelurostrongylus abstrusus has been established for pre-existing infections; a product specifically authorised for adult A. abstrusus treatment is required.

Special Precautions for Use in Animals

  • Care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes of the animal.
  • Do not use directly on skin lesions.
  • Treatment of kittens less than 9 weeks of age and cats less than 1.2 kg bodyweight is not recommended due to lack of available data.
  • Treatment of male breeding animals is not recommended.
  • This veterinary medicinal product is for topical use only and should not be administered orally.
  • It is important to apply the dose as indicated to prevent the animal from licking and ingesting the veterinary medicinal product.
  • Do not allow recently treated animals to groom each other.
  • Do not allow treated animals to come into contact with untreated animals until the application site is dry.

Special Precautions to be Taken by the Person Administering the Product

  • Contact with the veterinary medicinal product should be avoided. Disposable protective gloves (obtained with this product at the point of sale) must be worn when handling.
  • Persons with a known hypersensitivity to fluralaner or any excipients should avoid any exposure to the product.
  • The product binds to skin and may bind to surfaces after spillage. Skin rashes, tingling or numbness have been reported after skin contact. If skin contact occurs, wash the affected area immediately with soap and water. In some cases, soap and water may not be sufficient to remove the product from fingers.
  • Contact with the product may also occur when handling the treated animal.
  • Ensure the animal's application site is no longer noticeable before resuming contact, including cuddling or sharing a bed. It takes up to 48 hours for the application site to become dry but may be noticeable for longer.
  • If skin reactions occur, consult a physician and show the veterinary medicinal product packaging.
  • People with sensitive skin or known allergy to veterinary medicinal products of this type should handle the product and treated animals with caution.
  • This veterinary medicinal product can cause eye irritation. In case of eye contact, rinse thoroughly with water immediately.
  • This product is harmful after ingestion. Keep the veterinary medicinal product in its original packaging until use, to prevent children from direct access. A used pipette should be disposed of immediately. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice and show the package leaflet or label to a physician.
  • The veterinary medicinal product is highly flammable. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame, or other sources of ignition.
  • If spilled onto surfaces, remove excess product with paper tissue and clean the area with detergent.

Use During Pregnancy, Lactation or Lay

The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established in pregnant or lactating animals, and therefore its use in such animals is not recommended.

Interaction with Other Medicinal Products

Macrocyclic lactones, including moxidectin, are substrates for p-glycoprotein. Therefore, during treatment with Bravecto Plus, other products that inhibit p-glycoprotein (e.g., cyclosporine, ketoconazole, spinosad, verapamil) should only be used concomitantly according to the benefit-risk assessment of the responsible veterinarian.

Adverse Reactions

  • Common (1 to 10 animals / 100 animals treated): Skin reactions at the application site (application site alopecia, flaking skin, application site reddening, and application site pruritus).
  • Uncommon (1 to 10 animals / 1,000 animals treated): Dyspnoea (after licking the application site), tachypnoea, hypersalivation, emesis, haematemesis, diarrhoea, lethargy, pyrexia, mydriasis.
  • Very rare (<1 animal / 10,000 animals treated, including isolated reports): Anorexia, neurological disorders (e.g., tremor, ataxia).
