FAQ

What parasites does Stronghold Plus Cat 2.5 - 5kg 0.5ml Pipettes Pack of 6 treat?

Stronghold Plus offers comprehensive protection against fleas, ticks, roundworms, hookworms, ear mites, biting lice, and helps prevent heartworm disease in cats weighing 2.5 to 5 kg.

How often should I apply Stronghold Plus to my cat?

For optimal flea and tick control, apply Stronghold Plus monthly. For heartworm prevention, it should be administered monthly, typically from within one month of first mosquito exposure until the end of the mosquito season. For other parasites like roundworms, hookworms, lice, ear mites, and notoedric mange, a single dose is usually sufficient, but your vet will advise on specific retreatment needs.

Why is Stronghold Plus a prescription-only medicine (POM-V)?

Stronghold Plus is classified as a Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinary (POM-V) because it contains active ingredients that require veterinary oversight to ensure it is used safely and effectively for your cat's specific health needs. A valid prescription from your vet is needed to purchase this product.

Can Stronghold Plus be used on kittens?

Stronghold Plus can be used on cats aged at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 1.25 kg bodyweight. Always check the specific product weight range (e.g., 2.5-5kg for this product) and consult your vet for suitability.

  • Ensure the animal’s hair coat is dry before application.
  • Remove the pipette from its protective packaging immediately prior to administration.
  • Hold the pipette upright, firmly depress the cap to puncture the applicator seal, then remove the cap.
  • Part the hair at the base of the cat's neck in front of the shoulder blades to expose a small area of skin.
  • Apply the tip of the pipette directly to the skin without massaging.
  • Squeeze the pipette firmly 3–4 times to empty the contents in one spot. Avoid contact between the product and your fingers.

Important Safety Information:

  • For animal treatment only.
  • This product is a veterinary medicinal product subject to prescription (POM-V).
  • Contraindications: Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to selamectin, sarolaner, or any excipients. Do not use in cats suffering from concomitant disease, or those that are debilitated and underweight (for their size and age).
  • Target Species Precautions: Use only in cats aged at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 1.25 kg bodyweight. Do not apply when the animal's hair coat is wet. For ear mite treatment, do not apply directly to the ear canal.
  • Ingestion: It is crucial to apply the dose as indicated to prevent the animal from licking and ingesting the product. If significant ingestion occurs, transient gastrointestinal effects such as hypersalivation, emesis, soft faeces or reduced food consumption may be observed, which normally resolve without treatment.
  • Flammability: This product is highly flammable. Keep treated animals away from fires and other sources of ignition for at least 30 minutes or until the hair coat is dry. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame or other sources of ignition.
  • Environmental Flea Control: The product kills adult fleas before they lay eggs, and kills larvae found in the environment, aiding in the control of existing environmental flea infestations.
  • Heartworm Testing: It is recommended that cats 6 months of age or more, living in countries where heartworm exists, are tested for existing adult heartworm infections before starting preventive use. This product is not effective against adult *D. immitis*.
  • Tick-borne Diseases: Ticks need to start feeding on the host to become exposed to sarolaner; therefore, the transmission of infectious tick-borne diseases cannot be excluded.
  • Notoedric Mange: The efficacy has not been established in cats with severe clinical signs of *N. cati*. Use in such cases should be based on the vet's benefit-risk assessment.

Precautions for the Person Administering the Product:

  • This product is harmful after ingestion. Keep it in the original packaging until use to prevent children from direct access. Used pipettes should be disposed of immediately.
  • In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or label to the physician.
  • May cause eye irritation. Avoid eye contact, including hand-to-eye contact.
  • Avoid direct contact with treated animals until the application area is dry.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after use and wash off any product from skin immediately with soap and water. In case of accidental eye exposure, flush eyes immediately with water, seek medical advice, and show the package leaflet or label to the physician.
  • People with sensitive skin or known allergy to veterinary medicinal products of this type should handle the product with caution.
  • Children are not allowed to play with treated cats for 4 hours after treatment.
  • It is recommended to treat animals in the evening. On the day of treatment, treated animals should not be permitted to sleep in the same bed as their owner, especially children.

Pregnancy, Lactation and Fertility:

The safety of sarolaner has not been established during pregnancy and lactation or in animals intended for breeding. Selamectin is considered safe for use in breeding, pregnant and lactating cats. Use of this product in such cases should be based on the responsible veterinarian's benefit-risk assessment.
