Contraindications
- Do not use in cats suffering from systemic disease such as primary liver disease or diabetes mellitus.
- Do not use in cats showing signs of autoimmune disease.
- Do not use in animals with disorders of white blood cells, such as neutropenia and lymphopenia.
- Do not use in animals with platelet disorders and coagulopathies (particularly thrombocytopenia).
- Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
- Do not use in pregnant and lactating females.
Special Warnings and Precautions for Use
- To enhance stabilisation, maintain the same feeding and dosing schedule daily.
- Cats with renal dysfunction should be monitored carefully due to Thiamazole's effect on glomerular filtration rate.
- Haematology must be monitored regularly due to the risk of leucopenia or haemolytic anaemia.
- If your cat appears unwell or febrile during therapy, a blood sample should be taken for routine haematology and biochemistry.
- Neutropenic animals (neutrophil counts <2.5 x 109/l) should receive prophylactic bactericidal antibacterial drugs and supportive therapy.
- As Thiamazole can cause haemoconcentration, ensure cats always have access to drinking water.
Special Precautions for the Person Administering the Product
- People with known hypersensitivity (allergy) to Thiamazole or Vanillin should avoid contact with the veterinary medicinal product.
- If allergic symptoms develop (skin rash, swelling of face, lips or eyes, difficulty breathing), seek medical attention immediately and show the package leaflet or label to a physician.
- Thiamazole may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, fever, joint pain, pruritus (itching) and pancytopaenia (decrease in blood cells and platelets).
- The veterinary medicinal product may also cause skin irritation.
- Avoid dermal and oral exposure, including hand-to-mouth contact.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the product or used litter.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after administration and handling of the product or cleaning vomit/litter.
- Wipe any residual veterinary medicinal product from the dosing syringe tip with a tissue and dispose of it immediately.
- The used syringe should be stored with the veterinary medicinal product in the original carton.
- In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or label to a physician.
- This veterinary medicinal product may cause eye irritation. Avoid eye contact; rinse eyes immediately with clean running water if contact occurs and seek medical advice if irritation develops.
- As Thiamazole is a suspected human teratogen, women of child-bearing age must wear non-permeable single-use gloves when administering the product or handling litter/vomit of treated cats.
- If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are attempting to conceive, you should not administer the product or handle the litter/vomit of treated cats.
Adverse Events
Adverse reactions have been reported following long-term control of hyperthyroidism. Many signs may be mild and transitory, often reversible when medication is stopped. Uncommon effects (1 to 10 animals / 1,000 animals treated) include vomiting, inappetence/anorexia, lethargy, pruritus, excoriations, bleeding, icterus, hepatopathy. Rare effects (1 to 10 animals / 10,000 animals treated) include eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, neutropenia, lymphopenia, leucopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, serum anti-nuclear antibodies, and anaemia. Very rare effects (<1 animal / 10,000 animals treated) include lymphadenopathy.
