• Soften the hair first. Wash the area with plenty of warm water to soften hairs and open pores — shaving straight after a shower works well. Give skin around five minutes to dry before applying gel.
• Exfoliate. Several days of stubble traps dirt, oil and dead skin. Clearing the razor's path first makes for a more comfortable shave.
• Apply plenty of shaving gel. Skin is more sensitive than usual when it hasn't been shaved for a few days, so be generous with a gentle moisturising gel.
• Shave with the grain. Follow the direction of hair growth using light strokes, and avoid going back over the same area repeatedly.
• Rinse the blade as you go. Rinse under warm water between strokes. Don't knock the razor against the sink to clear hairs — this can damage the blades.
• Follow with a moisturiser. Apply a good post-shave moisturiser rather than going straight in with aftershave, and give freshly shaved skin time to settle.

Blades are sharp — handle with care and keep out of the reach of children. Replace the blade once it dulls, as blunt blades increase the risk of nicks, cuts and irritation.
