Your skin is your body's largest organ, acting as a crucial barrier against the world. Yet, it's easy to overlook its importance in our daily health routine. From protecting you against the elements to helping regulate your body temperature, healthy skin is fundamental to your overall well-being. So, how can you best look after it?

Our team of pharmacists have prepared this guide to help you understand the simple steps you can take to maintain your skin's health and vitality. By adopting a consistent and informed approach, you can keep your skin at its best, whatever your age or lifestyle.

Why Skin Care Matters More Than You Think

A common misconception is that skincare is just for vanity, but it's a vital part of looking after your health.

Your First Line of Defence: Your skin acts as a protective barrier, shielding you from things like bacteria, pollution, and UV radiation. A proper routine helps maintain this barrier, preventing minor issues and supporting your body's overall defences.

Preventing Common Skin Issues: A consistent routine can help prevent issues like dryness, irritation, and breakouts. It's a myth that if you have oily skin, you don't need to moisturise. In fact, skipping moisturiser can cause your skin to overproduce oil to compensate, potentially making matters worse.

Supporting Long-Term Skin Health: Looking after your skin today can help you maintain a healthy-looking complexion in the future. Protecting your skin from the sun, for example, is one of the most effective ways to support its long-term health.

Building Your Daily Skincare Routine

A good skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Our pharmacists recommend a simple, three-step approach:

Cleanse: The first step is to gently wash your face to remove dirt, impurities, and excess oil that build up throughout the day. This helps keep your pores clear and prepares your skin for the next steps. It's best to use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, as washing with very hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils.

Moisturise: Hydration is key to healthy skin. Moisturisers, also known as emollients, work by trapping moisture in the skin to help keep it soft and hydrated. They are particularly useful for those with dry or itchy skin conditions like eczema (atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, discoid eczema, varicose eczema). You can find a variety of emollients, from light lotions for the day to rich ointments for overnight use.

Protect: One of the most important steps for long-term skin health is daily sun protection. Harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds and even windows, so applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day is a simple yet crucial habit.

Choosing the Right Products for You

With so many products available, it can be hard to know what to choose. The key is to find products that are gentle and suitable for your specific skin type. Whether your skin is oily, dry, sensitive, or a combination, there's a product out there for you. A simple routine with a few high-quality products is often more effective than overloading your skin with too many different ones. A simple way to choose your skincare product is to consider its texture and consistency, as this can tell you how well it will hydrate your skin. Generally, the more oil a product contains, the thicker and more moisturising it is.

Ointments are the thickest, with the highest oil content. They are excellent for very dry or cracked skin as they create a protective barrier that locks in moisture, making them a common choice for conditions like eczema.

Creams are a balance of oil and water, making them less greasy than ointments. They're a popular choice for normal to dry skin.

Lotions are a lighter, water-based option that absorbs quickly, making them suitable for normal, oily, or combination skin, especially in warmer weather.

Gels are the most lightweight and water-based. They absorb very quickly without leaving a residue, which is ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.

By choosing a product with a texture that matches your skin's needs, you can ensure it receives the right level of hydration and support.

Beyond the Bottle: Holistic Skin Health

Looking after your skin is about more than just what you put on it. Other factors can make a big difference, including:

Hydration: Drinking enough water helps to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins provides the nutrients your skin needs to thrive.

Sleep: Quality sleep gives your skin time to repair and regenerate, which is why it often looks its best after a good night's rest.

Stress Management: High stress levels can impact your skin's health, so taking time for yourself is important.
