Spending time outdoors can be enjoyable, but protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is essential. Whether you’re at home in the UK or travelling abroad, the right sun protection helps reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Here’s what you need to know about SPF, sunscreen application, and keeping children safe in the sun.

Understanding SPF and UVA Protection

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn. For example, if you usually burn after 10 minutes, an SPF 15 product may extend that time to around 150 minutes. However, sunscreen should always be reapplied every two hours, regardless of its SPF rating.

For everyday use, choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 15, but higher protection may be advisable if you’re outdoors for longer periods.

Look for broad-spectrum sunscreen, which shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. In the UK, UVA protection is shown on packaging with a star rating from 0 to 5 – the more stars, the better the protection.

How to Apply Sunscreen Effectively

Apply sunscreen generously about 30 minutes before going outside and reapply at least every two hours. Pay particular attention to areas that are often missed, such as the ears, nose, shoulders, and the tops of the feet.

Water can wash away sunscreen, and its reflective surface increases UV exposure. Even products labelled “water-resistant” or “waterproof” should be reapplied after swimming or towel-drying to ensure ongoing protection.

Children’s Sun Care Tips

Children’s skin is especially sensitive to the sun, so extra care is needed:

  • Keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight, particularly around midday.
  • Encourage play in the shade between 11am and 3pm when the sun is strongest. In hotter climates, shade for longer periods may be necessary.
  • Dress children in loose, lightweight clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect their face and neck.
  • Apply sunscreen generously to exposed areas, including ears, nose, cheeks, shoulders, and the back of the neck.
  • Reapply sunscreen frequently throughout the day, especially after swimming.

Practical Sun Safety Reminders

Sun safety isn’t only about sunscreen. Combining protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shade with regular sunscreen use gives the best protection. Staying hydrated and seeking shade during the hottest hours can also help you enjoy the sun more comfortably.
