Advocate for Large Dogs is a spot-on solution containing imidacloprid and moxidectin, for dogs over 10kg up to 25kg suffering from, or at risk from, mixed parasitic infections. It is used against fleas together with one or more of the other parasites it covers, including lungworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, ear mites and mange mites. This pack contains 3 pipettes of 2.5ml. Advocate is a POM-V veterinary medicine.

Description

Advocate spot-on for large dogs: fleas, worms and mites in one treatment

Advocate contains two active ingredients. Imidacloprid is an ectoparasiticide which is effective against adult fleas and larval flea stages. Moxidectin is a macrocyclic lactone of the milbemycin family, active against many internal and external parasites, including the larval stages of heartworm and gastrointestinal nematodes.

The pipette is applied to the skin between the shoulder blades. One treatment prevents future flea infestation for 4 weeks, and the need for and frequency of re-treatment should be based on professional advice, taking into account the local situation and your dog's lifestyle.

Key features of Advocate for Large Dogs 10-25kg:

  • Active ingredients: imidacloprid 250mg and moxidectin 62.5mg in each 2.5ml pipette.
  • For dogs over 10kg up to 25kg. Smaller and larger dogs need a different Advocate pipette size.
  • Fleas plus other parasites: used when treatment against fleas and one or more other target parasites is needed at the same time.
  • Lungworm: prevention and treatment of Angiostrongylus vasorum.
  • Pack of 3 pipettes: three treatments when given at monthly intervals.

For use under veterinary direction

Advocate is a prescription-only veterinary medicine. Your vet will decide which parasites to treat and how often, and dogs living in, or travelling to, areas where heartworm is endemic may need testing first. FAQ

Which dogs is Advocate for Large Dogs suitable for?

Advocate for Large Dogs is for dogs weighing over 10kg up to 25kg. Dogs over 4kg up to 10kg use Advocate for medium dogs and dogs over 25kg up to 40kg use Advocate for extra-large dogs. Do not use in puppies under 7 weeks of age, and do not use on cats or ferrets.

Does Advocate for Large Dogs treat lungworm?

Yes. Advocate is used for the prevention of angiostrongylosis and the treatment of Angiostrongylus vasorum (lungworm). A single dose is given, and in areas where it is common, regular monthly applications prevent infection. A further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended, as some dogs may need a second treatment.

Can my dog be bathed or swim after an Advocate treatment?

Brief contact with water once or twice between monthly treatments is unlikely to significantly reduce how well Advocate works, but frequent shampooing or immersion in water after treatment may reduce its efficacy. Dogs should not be allowed to swim in surface waters for 4 days after treatment.

How do you apply Advocate spot-on to a dog?

With the dog standing, part the coat between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible, place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze it firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin. Do not apply it in the mouth, eyes or ears, do not allow recently treated dogs to groom each other, and keep them away from untreated animals until the application site is dry.

Can Advocate be used on Collies and related breeds?

Advocate contains moxidectin, so special care should be taken with Collie or Old English Sheepdogs and related breeds or crossbreeds to apply it correctly, and in particular to prevent them taking it in by mouth. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

Directions

Always follow the directions and dosage given to you by your prescriber.

Dosage

External use. To ensure a correct dosage, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible.

The recommended minimum doses are 10 mg/kg bodyweight imidacloprid and 2.5 mg/kg bodyweight moxidectin, equivalent to 0.1 ml/kg bodyweight.

  • Dogs 4kg or under: Advocate for small dogs (0.4 ml).
  • Dogs over 4kg to 10kg: Advocate for medium dogs (1.0 ml).
  • Dogs over 10kg to 25kg: Advocate for large dogs (2.5 ml), this product.
  • Dogs over 25kg to 40kg: Advocate for extra-large dogs (4.0 ml).
  • Dogs over 40kg: the appropriate combination of pipettes.

Do not use in puppies under 7 weeks of age.

For treatment or prevention of infestations with the parasites indicated for use of this veterinary medicinal product, the need for and frequency of re-treatment(s) should be based on professional advice and should take into account the local epidemiological situation and the animal's lifestyle.

Treatment schedules

  • Fleas: one treatment prevents future flea infestation for 4 weeks. Existing pupae in the environment may emerge for 6 weeks or longer after treatment is initiated, so it may be necessary to combine treatment with environmental treatments. Administer at monthly intervals when used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis.
  • Biting lice: a single dose. A further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended as some animals may require a second treatment.
  • Ear mites: a single dose. Loose debris should be gently removed from the external ear canal at each treatment. A further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended. Do not apply directly to the ear canal.
  • Sarcoptic mange: a single dose administered twice 4 weeks apart.
  • Demodicosis: a single dose every 4 weeks for 2 to 4 months. Severe cases may require more prolonged and more frequent treatment, at the discretion of the veterinarian. Treatment should continue until skin scrapings are negative on at least 2 consecutive monthly occasions, and should be stopped in dogs that show no improvement or do not respond in mite count after 2 months.
  • Heartworm prevention (D. immitis): apply at regular monthly intervals during the time of year when mosquitoes are present, starting after first possible exposure but not more than one month after it, and continuing until 1 month after the last exposure. When replacing another heartworm preventative, give the first treatment within 1 month of the last dose of the former medication.
  • Skin worm prevention (D. repens): apply at regular monthly intervals during the time of year when mosquitoes are present. It may be administered throughout the year or at least 1 month before the first expected exposure to mosquitoes, and treatment should continue until 1 month after the last exposure.
  • Microfilariae (D. immitis): monthly for two consecutive months.
  • Skin worm treatment (adult D. repens): monthly for six consecutive months.
  • Microfilariae reduction (D. repens): monthly for four consecutive months.
  • Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum): a single dose. A further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended. In endemic areas regular monthly applications will prevent angiostrongylosis.
  • Crenosoma vulpis: a single dose.
  • Spirocercosis prevention: monthly.
  • Eucoleus (Capillaria) boehmi: monthly for two consecutive months; prevent auto-coprophagia between the two treatments.
  • Eye worm (Thelazia callipaeda): a single dose.
  • Roundworm, hookworm and whipworm: in areas endemic for heartworm, monthly treatment may significantly reduce the risk of re-infection. In non-endemic areas, Advocate can be used as part of a seasonal prevention programme against fleas and gastrointestinal nematodes.

How to apply

Warnings

Before use

Do not use:

  • in puppies under 7 weeks of age.
  • in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients.
  • in dogs classified as Class 4 for heartworm disease.
  • in cats: the corresponding Advocate for cats product must be used for cats.
  • in ferrets: only Advocate for small cats and ferrets must be used for ferrets.
  • on canaries.

Special warnings: Brief contact of the animal with water on one or two occasions between monthly treatments is unlikely to significantly reduce the efficacy, but frequent shampooing or immersion in water after treatment may reduce the efficacy. Other animals in the same household can be a source of re-infection and should be treated as necessary with an appropriate product. Unnecessary use of antiparasitics or use deviating from the instructions given in the SPC may increase the resistance selection pressure and lead to reduced efficacy. The decision to use the product should be based on confirmation of the parasitic species and burden, or of the risk of infestation based on its epidemiological features, for each individual animal.

Special precautions for use in animals:

  • The treatment of animals weighing less than 1 kg should be based on a benefit-risk assessment. Use in sick and debilitated animals only based on a benefit-risk assessment.
  • Do not apply in the mouth, in the eyes or the ears of the animal. Care should be taken that the product is not ingested and does not come into contact with the eyes or mouth of the treated animal or other animals.
  • Do not allow recently treated animals to groom each other. Do not allow treated animals to come into contact with untreated animals until the application site is dry.
  • Advocate contains moxidectin (a macrocyclic lactone): special care should be taken with Collie or Old English Sheep dogs and related breeds or crossbreeds to administer it correctly; in particular, oral uptake should be prevented.
  • All dogs 6 months of age or more, living in areas endemic for heartworm, should be tested for existing adult heartworm infection before treatment. Advocate has no therapeutic effect against adult Dirofilaria immitis. Use in dogs with obvious or severe symptoms of heartworm disease should be based on a careful benefit-risk assessment by the treating veterinarian.
  • Imidacloprid is toxic for birds, especially canaries.

Precautions for the person applying the product:

  • This product can cause skin, eye or mouth irritation. In very rare cases it may cause skin sensitisation, transient skin reactions (for example numbness, irritation or burning/tingling sensation) or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.
  • People with a known hypersensitivity to benzyl alcohol, imidacloprid or moxidectin should administer the product with caution.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes or mouth. Do not eat, drink or smoke during application. Wash hands thoroughly after use. After application do not stroke or groom animals until the application site is dry.
  • In case of accidental spillage onto skin, wash off immediately with soap and water. If it gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with water.
  • If skin or eye symptoms persist, or the product is accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or label to the physician.

Environment: The product should not enter water courses as imidacloprid and moxidectin may be dangerous for fish and other aquatic organisms. Dogs should not be allowed to swim in surface waters for 4 days after treatment.

Other precautions: The solvent may stain or damage certain materials including leather, fabrics, plastics and finished surfaces. Allow the application site to dry before permitting contact with such materials.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility: The safety has not been established during pregnancy and lactation. The use is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation. Do not use in breeding animals.

Interactions: During treatment with Advocate no other antiparasitic macrocyclic lactone should be administered. Safety when administered on the same day as an adulticide to remove adult heartworms has not been evaluated.

Adverse events and overdose

Common (1 to 10 animals in 100 treated): diarrhoea, vomiting, cough, dyspnoea, tachypnoea, inappetence, lethargy. These signs are common in heartworm positive dogs with microfilaraemia, and there is a risk of gastrointestinal signs and severe respiratory signs that may require prompt veterinary treatment.

Rare (1 to 10 animals in 10,000 treated): vomiting.

Very rare (less than 1 animal in 10,000 treated, including isolated reports): application site greasy fur, hair loss, itching or reddening (these disappear without further treatment); behavioural disorder such as agitation, inappetence and lethargy (transient, related to sensation at the application site); hypersalivation (not a sign of intoxication; disappears within minutes without treatment; correct application will minimise licking of the application site); neurological signs such as ataxia or muscle tremor (most occur transiently); pruritus.

Reporting adverse events is important. It allows continuous safety monitoring of a veterinary medicinal product. Reports should be sent, preferably via a veterinarian, to either the marketing authorisation holder or the national competent authority via the national reporting system.

Overdose: After accidental oral ingestion or overdose, neurological signs (most of which are transient) such as ataxia, generalised tremors, ocular signs (dilated pupils, little pupillary reflex, nystagmus), abnormal respiration, salivation and vomiting may occur in very rare cases. In case of accidental oral uptake, symptomatic treatment should be administered. There is no known specific antidote. The use of activated charcoal may be beneficial.

Storage and disposal

  • Do not store above 30°C.
  • Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. The product should not enter water courses as imidacloprid and moxidectin may be dangerous for fish and other aquatic organisms. Use take-back schemes for the disposal of any unused veterinary medicinal product or waste materials derived thereof in accordance with local requirements and with any national collection systems applicable.
