CosmoCol Plain 30 Sachets contain macrogol 3350, an osmotic laxative used to effectively treat chronic constipation and faecal impaction in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

Description

Effective Relief for Constipation and Faecal Impaction

CosmoCol Plain is a highly effective laxative containing macrogol 3350, which works by drawing water into the bowel to soften stools and make them easier to pass. This helps provide gentle yet thorough relief from both long-term (chronic) constipation and faecal impaction, a severe form of constipation where a blockage of hard stools occurs.

The electrolytes (salts) included in CosmoCol help to maintain the body's normal fluid and electrolyte balance during treatment, ensuring a more comfortable experience. Each sachet is unflavoured, making it easy to mix with water or a drink of your choice.

How CosmoCol Works for You

Macrogol 3350 is an osmotic laxative, meaning it works physically rather than chemically. It passes through the gut without being absorbed into the body, acting locally to:

  • Increase water content in the stool, making it softer.
  • Increase stool bulk, which helps stimulate natural bowel movements.
  • Facilitate easier and more comfortable stool passage.

CosmoCol Plain is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and above. For more information on how different treatments compare, read our Laxatives Comparison Guide.

FAQ

What is the active ingredient in CosmoCol Plain and how does it work?

CosmoCol Plain contains macrogol 3350 as its primary active ingredient. Macrogol is an osmotic laxative that works by drawing water into your bowel, which softens the faeces and increases its volume. This makes stools easier to pass, helping to relieve constipation.

Who can use CosmoCol Plain?

CosmoCol Plain is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over for the treatment of chronic constipation and faecal impaction.

How should I prepare and take CosmoCol Plain sachets?

To prepare, empty the contents of one sachet into a glass. Add approximately 125 ml of water (or a quarter pint) and stir well until the powder has dissolved completely. Once dissolved, drink the solution. It can be taken at any time, with or without food or drink.

Can I use CosmoCol Plain for long-term constipation?

For chronic constipation, treatment with CosmoCol Plain should not normally last longer than 2 weeks. If your symptoms persist or worsen after 14 days, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor may advise a longer course of treatment if necessary.

What is faecal impaction and how is CosmoCol Plain used for it?

Faecal impaction is a severe form of persistent constipation where a large volume of stools blocks the rectum and/or colon. Before using CosmoCol for faecal impaction, a doctor must confirm the condition. The recommended dose for impaction is typically 8 sachets daily, consumed within 6 hours. Treatment usually lasts no longer than 3 days and should stop once a large volume of stools is passed.
