An emollient with something extra

Doublebase Flare Relief Emollient is a highly moisturising and protective treatment for dry skin. Its primary action is as an emollient, to moisturise the skin, with an added medicinal substance, nicotinamide, which provides supplementary anti-inflammatory action.

It helps in the treatment and routine management of dry and inflamed skin conditions such as mild to moderate dermatitis, various forms of eczema and psoriasis, in circumstances where a supplementary anti-inflammatory may be beneficial, such as during flare-ups.

What nicotinamide is

Nicotinamide is a vitamin B derivative that occurs naturally in the body, included here at 4%. Despite the similar name, it is not nicotine and has nothing to do with it.

Using it alongside other treatments

Flare Relief can be used in addition to other emollients or treatments your doctor, nurse or pharmacist has prescribed. If you are using a prescribed topical treatment, apply that first and allow time for it to absorb before applying Flare Relief. It is not known to affect, or be affected by, medicines taken by mouth.

Practical details

• Isopropyl myristate 15%, liquid paraffin 15%, nicotinamide 4%

1. Turn the pump top in the direction of the open arrow to unlock it, then press the pump several times to prime it before first use.
2. Gently smooth the emollient over and around all dry or inflamed areas using a few light strokes in the direction of hair growth. Allow any excess to absorb and do not rub vigorously.
3. If you are using topical medicines, follow their instructions and allow time for absorption before applying Doublebase. This is normally about 30 minutes for prescribed topical corticosteroids, and up to 2 hours for certain prescribed calcineurin inhibitors.
4. Continue to use as needed, during flares or daily if helpful. If there is no improvement within 2 to 4 weeks, consult your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Storage: keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not store above 25°C and do not freeze. Do not use after the use-by date shown on the container and carton. Once opened, the product can be used until the use-by date. After use, turn the pump in the direction of the stop arrow to lock it.

If a small pocket of air forms around the bottom of the pump's dip tube and the gel becomes harder to dispense, tap the base of the bottle firmly on a hard surface two or three times so the gel settles, then pump slowly.

Fire hazard

Do not smoke or go near naked flames — risk of severe burns. Fabric such as clothing, bedding and dressings that has been in contact with this product burns more easily and is a serious fire hazard. Washing clothing and bedding may reduce product build-up but will not totally remove it. Change and wash clothing and dressings frequently.

Do not use

• If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to nicotinamide or to any of the other ingredients.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Requirements for vitamin B derivatives such as nicotinamide are increased during pregnancy and infancy, but safety trials have not been conducted during pregnancy or breast-feeding. With prolonged use over significant areas it may be possible to exceed the recommended levels of nicotinamide during pregnancy, so caution should be exercised, particularly in the first three months. When breast-feeding, if use on the nipples is necessary, apply sparingly and after feeds, and gently wipe away any remaining product before feeding your baby. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this product.

Possible side effects

Emollients can sometimes be associated with temporary tingling, itching or stinging, especially where the skin is broken or scratched. Regular use can help restore damaged skin, so these symptoms may subside after a few days. If they are troublesome, persist for more than a few minutes after application, or do not subside after several days of use, stop using the gel and consult your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

In rare cases this product may cause mild rashes or allergic skin reactions on extremely sensitive skin. These tend to occur during or soon after the first few uses.

Stop using this gel and tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if your skin condition seems to look or feel worse, or if any side effects get serious or you notice any not mentioned here.

If the product is accidentally swallowed, its oily ingredients may cause diarrhoea. Treat the symptoms as you would any case of diarrhoea, drink plenty of water, and do not attempt to cause vomiting.
