Calcium carbonate antacid

Calcium carbonate is an antacid, which works by helping to reduce acidity in the stomach. Each tablet contains 500mg, and is taken for the relief of indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain or discomfort (dyspepsia), acidity and passing wind (flatulence).

Taken as and when you need them

The tablets can be sucked or chewed, whichever you prefer, and are taken as required rather than on a fixed schedule. They have a peppermint flavour.

Before you take them

These tablets can interfere with how some other medicines work, so if you take other medicines by mouth, take them two hours apart. They are not suitable for anyone with kidney problems or a history of kidney stones, and they interact with a number of heart, bone and antibiotic medicines. Read the warnings in full, and speak to your pharmacist if you take anything else regularly.

Practical details

• Maximum 16 tablets in any 24 hours

To be sucked or chewed as preferred.

• Adults, the elderly and children over 12 years: 1 or 2 tablets, as required. Do not take more than 16 tablets in any 24 hour period.
• Children under 12 years: Do not give.

Do not take more medicine than the label tells you to. If your symptoms persist for more than 7 days or worsen, you must see a doctor or pharmacist.

If you take too many tablets by mistake, contact your doctor or pharmacist straight away.

If you are taking other medicines by mouth, it is recommended to take them 2 hours apart.

Do not store above 25°C. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not take if you

• are allergic to calcium carbonate or any of the other ingredients
• have kidney problems, including kidney stones or a history of kidney stones
• have an overactive parathyroid gland
• have heart problems and are taking cardiac glycosides (e.g. digoxin)
• are on a low phosphate diet
• have been told by your doctor that you have high levels of calcium or low levels of phosphate in your blood
• have Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a tumour in the stomach that causes excess acid production)
• are under 12 years of age

See your doctor or pharmacist before taking if you

• are pregnant
• are elderly
• have diabetes
• have an intolerance to some sugars
• have high calcium levels in your urine

Taking other medicines

If you are taking other medicines by mouth, it is recommended to take them 2 hours apart, as this medicine may interfere with the action of some other medicines. If you are taking any of the following, please see your doctor:

• tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics (e.g. sumycin and tetracyn)
• heart medicines (especially digoxin) or beta-blockers (e.g. atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol), which can also be used to treat high blood pressure
• bisphosphonates, a group of medicines used to treat bone diseases (e.g. etidronate and pamidronate)
• thiazide diuretics, sometimes called water tablets, used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (e.g. chlortalidone and metolazone)
• ketoconazole, used to treat fungal infections
• drugs used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
• drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and metabolic disorders (e.g. penicillamine)
• drugs used to treat stomach ulcers and acid reflux (e.g. cimetidine and ranitidine)
• chloroquine, used to treat malaria
• glucocorticoids, used to treat allergic, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders
• oral iron medicines used to treat anaemia
• thyroxine, used to treat an underactive thyroid gland

Information about some of the ingredients

• This medicine contains glucose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.
• This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per 2 tablets, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'.

Possible side effects

Most people do not have any side effects while taking this medicine. However, if you experience any of the following, or anything else unusual happens, stop taking the medicine immediately and see your doctor or pharmacist:

• allergic reactions, such as skin rash, peeling of the skin, itching, swollen red areas of the skin, sometimes with shortness of breath or swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat or face
• constipation, diarrhoea, stomach pain, belching, and passing wind (flatulence)
• fatigue, confusion, poor appetite, feeling sick or being sick, as these may be signs of changes in the amount of calcium and the pH of your blood (this is only seen after regular use)
• muscle weakness
• heartburn (acid rebound), which is most likely to occur when you stop taking this type of medicine
