Description

Virbac Toothpaste Kit are a great way to introduce pets to the benefits of a regular oral hygiene programme.

Directions

Start dental homecare as early in life as possible as prevention of disease development is the aim. Include toothbrushing as part of the daily grooming routine.

You can sit small dogs on your lap whilst brushing, at the same time cuddling them to reduce their apprehension; alternatively one person cuddles and restrains whilst a second performs the toothbrushing.

The use of a "grooming table" type situation may be better accepted by some dogs.

Make your dog comfortable and approach from the side rather than the front.

Initially, just touch the muzzle and lift the lips to expose the teeth and gums. Then, place a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and allow your dog the sample to taste. Most dogs accept this well and may even regard the poultry-flavoured toothpaste a treat.

Next, lift the lips and rub a small amount to toothpaste onto the teeth and gums using your finger or the finger-brush.

When your dog is comfortable with having its mouth handled then start brushing with the soft-textured nylon bristle brush. This is the most efficient way to clean your dog's teeth, thus keeping the gums healthy.

Place a small amount of toothpaste on the soft-textured nylon bristle brush (press the toothpaste into the bristles) and gently brush one or two teeth including the gumline using a small circular strokes.

Gradually increase the number of teeth cleaned each time until the whole mouth can be cleaned in a single session. It usually takes 3 - 4 weeks to reach this stage.

The mouth does not need to be opened. It is mainly the buccal (outer, toward cheeks and lips) surfaces of the teeth, especially at the gum margin, which need brushing.

When your dog is comfortable with having the buccal surfaces of all its teeth brushed, an attempt should be made to open the mouth and brush the other surfaces of the teeth. It this is not accepted, there is every reason to continue with daily brushing to the buccal surfaces.
