Wegovy® (Semaglutide)

One of the UK’s leading GLP-1 weight loss treatment — now available as a once-weekly injection or a once-daily tablet

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that reduces hunger and helps you feel fuller for longer — with clinically proven weight loss of around 15% on the standard 2.4mg injection, and higher again on the new 7.2mg dose, alongside diet and exercise. The once-weekly injection is available now in six pen strengths from 0.25mg to 7.2mg, and the new once-daily tablet (MHRA-approved 11 June 2026) arrives from 7th July 2026.

Prescription-only medicine. All Wegovy treatments require a short online consultation reviewed by one of our GPhC-registered pharmacists.

The Wegovy Dose Journey — Injection & Tablet

Whichever form you choose, treatment starts at a low dose and steps up gradually — typically every 4 weeks — to give your body time to adjust and keep side effects manageable. Your prescriber may hold any step for longer if needed. Here’s how the two schedules run side by side:

Stage Injection (once weekly) Tablet (once daily)
Step 1 0.25mg · starting dose 1.5mg · starting dose
Step 2 0.5mg · escalating 4mg · escalating
Step 3 1mg · escalating 9mg · escalating
Step 4 1.7mg · escalating 25mg · maintenance dose reached
Maintenance 2.4mg · standard maintenance dose 25mg · continues
Higher dose option
Where clinically appropriate
7.2mg · prescriber-guided escalation from 2.4mg Not applicable — 25mg is the highest tablet strength

Each “step” is typically 4 weeks, and the two treatments do not progress in lockstep — the injection escalates over 16 weeks before reaching its 2.4mg maintenance dose, while the tablet reaches its 25mg maintenance dose over a shorter escalation of around 12 weeks. Your prescriber may hold any step for longer, or adjust the pace, to suit you.

Did you know? The doses look very different because so little of an oral dose survives digestion — the 25mg tablet delivers a comparable effect to the 2.4mg weekly injection. The 7.2mg injection dose is the newest addition to the Wegovy range; your pharmacist will advise whether stepping up beyond 2.4mg is appropriate for you, based on your progress and tolerability.
