Description

Co-codamol is a compound analgesic designed for the short-term treatment of various types of pain.

Each tablet contains:

  • Paracetamol (500mg): A widely used painkiller that also helps to reduce a high temperature.
  • Codeine Phosphate (8mg): An opioid medicine that works by blocking pain signals in the central nervous system. This combination is particularly effective for migraines, tension headaches, muscular aches, period pain, and toothache.

How long can I take Co-codamol for?

You should only take this medicine for a maximum of three days. Longer use carries a risk of addiction and withdrawal symptoms.

Can I take this with Ibuprofen?

Yes, you can generally take Co-codamol alongside ibuprofen, as they work differently. However, always check the labels of any other cold or flu remedies to ensure they don't already contain paracetamol.

What should I do if the pain persists after 3 days?

If your pain has not improved, it is important to speak with your GP or a pharmacist to investigate the underlying cause.

Directions

For oral use. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

  • Adults: 1-2 tablets, not more than every 4-6 hours, when necessary. Do not take more than 8 tablets in any 24 hour period.
  • Children (16-18 years): 1-2 tablets, every 6 hours, when necessary. Do not take more than 8 tablets in any 24 hour period.
  • Children (12-15 years): 1 tablet, every 6 hours, when necessary. Do not take more than 4 tablets in any 24 hour period.
  • Elderly: As for adults, although a lower dose may be needed. The dose should not be repeated more frequently than every 4 hours. If you are elderly and have a damaged liver your doctor will usually prescribe you a lower dose.

Do not give to children under 12 years unless your doctor has told you to.

  • Addiction Risk: This medicine contains codeine, which can cause addiction if taken continuously for more than three days. If you still have pain after three days, consult your doctor.
  • Drowsiness: May cause dizziness or sleepiness. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Paracetamol Warning: Contains paracetamol. Do not take with any other products containing paracetamol.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
  • Medical Advice: Seek advice before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of liver or kidney issues.

Very good for moderate pain that cannot be shifted by the usual basic painkillers. Eg. Toothache until an appointment can be made with a dentist.
