FAQ

How long does it take for Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges to work?

Once placed in your mouth, Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges begin to dissolve and release nicotine, providing craving relief within 20-30 minutes as you allow it to fully dissolve.

Can I use Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges if I only smoke occasionally?

These lozenges are generally intended for smokers who smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up. If you are an occasional smoker, it's best to consult a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable nicotine replacement therapy for you.

What should I do if I accidentally swallow a Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenge whole?

You should not chew or swallow the lozenge whole, as this can reduce the absorption of nicotine and may lead to stomach upset. If you accidentally swallow one, do not panic, but continue with your normal dosage schedule and avoid repeating the dose too soon. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Directions

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Your lozenges are a stop smoking aid. They can reduce your urge to smoke by providing some of the nicotine previously inhaled from cigarettes and helps you resist cigarettes. Because the lozenges do not contain the tar or carbon monoxide of cigarette smoke, they do not have the health dangers of tobacco. This pack contains lozenges which are for smokers who smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up.

How to take your lozenges:

  • Place one lozenge in your mouth and allow it to dissolve slowly. Move the lozenge from one side of your mouth to the other, the action should be repeated for 20 to 30 minutes until the lozenge is completely dissolved.
  • Do not chew or swallow the lozenge.
  • Do not eat or drink while a lozenge is in the mouth as this may reduce the absorption of nicotine.
  • Do not use more than 15 lozenges per day.
  • Do not use more than one lozenge at a time.

Adults aged 18 years and over:

Stopping smoking straightaway:

Use the lozenges according to the 3-step gradual reduction programme below, which is designed to help you manage your cravings and gradually cut down on the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, making it easier to quit completely in the future.

Step Initial treatment period Treatment period
STEP 1 Weeks 1 to 6 1 lozenge every 1 to 2 hours
STEP 2 Weeks 7 to 9 1 lozenge every 2 to 4 hours
STEP 3 Weeks 10 to 12 1 lozenge every 4 to 8 hours

After 12 weeks, you should have stopped smoking completely. If you are worried that you may start smoking again, talk to a healthcare professional.

Cutting down on smoking before you stop smoking altogether:

You may find it easier to cut down completely later if you use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help you reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day by as many as possible. Gradually replace cigarettes with Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges Peppermint Pack of 36, aiming to reduce your daily cigarette consumption. You should quit smoking completely by 6 months. If you have not been able to cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke each day after 6 weeks, talk to a healthcare professional.

Warnings

Do not take this medicine if you:

  • Are allergic to nicotine or any of the other ingredients in Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges Peppermint Pack of 36.
  • Are a non-smoker.
  • Are under 12 years of age. The level of nicotine in NRT is not suitable for children under 12. Children are more susceptible to the effects of nicotine, and it could cause severe toxicity, which can be fatal.

If you are in hospital because of a heart attack, severe heart rhythm disturbances or a stroke - you should try to quit smoking without using nicotine lozenges, unless your doctor tells you to use them - once you are discharged from hospital, you can use these lozenges as normal.

Please see your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you:

  • Have heart or circulation problems including heart failure or stable angina (episodes of chest discomfort that are usually predictable).
  • Have high blood pressure.
  • Have occlusive peripheral artery disease - which is a narrowing of the blood vessels outside of your heart.
  • Suffer from phenylketonuria, a rare inherited metabolic disorder (as this product contains aspartame E951).
  • Have serious liver or kidney disease.
  • Have a stomach ulcer or duodenal ulcer.
  • Have inflammation of the oesophagus (oesophagitis).
  • Are diabetic, as diabetic patients need to monitor their blood glucose levels more closely as nicotine absorption may make blood glucose levels more unstable.
  • Have been diagnosed as having a tumour of the adrenal glands (phaeochromocytoma) or thyroid glands (hyperthyroidism).
  • Have had allergic reactions (see also section 5 “Possible side effects”).

Smoking when you are pregnant is harmful:

You should try to quit smoking without NRT. If you cannot, using NRT is less dangerous than smoking. Try to breastfeed just before you take the lozenge. When the nicotine levels in your lozenge are at their lowest, that way your baby gets as little nicotine as possible.

Possible side effects:

Like all medicines, Nicotine Replace 4mg Lozenges Peppermint Pack of 36 can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions, stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention.
